“Don’t move.”

She stopped moving and tried to see around him, to see what had made him stop in his tracks.

He reached back slowly and handed her the two packages in his hand. She took them without a word and watched as he reached into his jacket and removed the weapon that was almost all strapped to his side. “Stay behind me and do exactly as I say."

He pushed open the door and she realized it had been left half-open.

He stepped into the house. She followed at his back and spotted the security keypad, wires spilling out from the panel. Her heart thudded in her chest. They were only two steps into the house when Lyon swore under his breath.

She followed his gaze: the dishes in the kitchen had been pulled out of the cabinets and thrown to the floor, the cabinet doors left open. The fridge was open too, its contents spilled onto the floor next to the shattered dishes.

She was about to take inventory of the living room when Lyon pushed her forcefully behind him. She started to protest when a guttural voice cut through the questions in her mind.

“Well, well, well. If it isn’t the Lion and his littlekotyonok.”

She barely registered the Russian word for kitten. She was too focused on the source of the voice. On the fact that when she finally managed to peer around Lyon’s body, she saw that it came from Musa, sitting calmly on the sofa while four large men surrounded him in a ring of protection, every one of them holding semiautomatic weapons.

Every one of them pointed at Lyon.

She didn’t have time to think about why she wasn’t afraid.
