She nodded her understanding.

“You’re not going to point out the stupidity in cutting off multiple income streams belonging to the organization?” he asked.

“I’m sure you had your reasons.” If she’d learned anything from the past twenty-four hours, it was that Lyon knew how to play the dangerous game they were both playing.

If he’d made a mistake, there was more to the story than he was letting on.

“Why doesn’t it make sense?” Alek asked.

Lyon looked at him. “What?”

“That you’ve been exiled. Why doesn’t it make sense?” Alek asked.

A wall dropped over Lyon’s features. “Let’s just say I thought I had cover.”

Kira filed that away to think about later. Cover? Who had offered Lyon cover? And why hadn’t they come through with it?

Alek nodded with a sigh, then rubbed a hand over his face. “Now what?”

Kira watched as Lyon paced the living room, his strides long and purposeful, as if he were stalking the answers he needed.

She drank her bourbon. Waiting. Letting her husband work the problem while she did her own thinking. She was on perilous ground.

They all were.

If Lyon had been exiled, anyone in the organization who gave him assistance could also be sanctioned.

But it also bought them time, although how much, Kira couldn’t say. It was the reason Musa hadn’t killed Lyon when it would have been easy to do so: exile wasn’t an order to kill, and Musa was trying to play by the rules.

Lyon still had the protection of his title. For the time being anyway.

But it wouldn’t last long. The Spies would convene a panel. They would put Lyon on trial whether he was there or not. If he was found guilty of breaking their rules, a hit would be ordered.

Then it would be open season — on Lyon and anyone who helped him.

She had to think about herself. About how to shore up her own interests in the event that Lyon was executed. About how to ensure she came out alive and preferably on top.

Except it wasn’t as easy as it should have been to plot her next move. Not when her husband stood at the center of the board, a king watching her with all-seeing eyes.

Not when, instead of taking his place, she was beginning to enjoy standing at his side.

Lyon stood. “I need to make a call.”

She was relieved by the distraction. She didn’t like where her thoughts were taking her.
