Lyon knew what Roman was saying. The New York assets were controlled by Igor. If Roman made any big moves, Igor would know and there would be hell to pay. “The kind of help I need is small. Subtle.”

“What are we talking about?” Roman asked.

“A few men,” Lyon said. “Disciplined, good shots, discreet.”

Lyon’s exile meant he couldn’t rely on men from Chicago anymore. No one but Alek, who’d pledged his loyalty to Lyon for better or worse. The men who’d agreed to stand with him — men like Borya Kamenev — had only agreed to back him as pakhan.

Defying the Spies to give assistance to Lyon was too much to ask.

That left Lyon outmanned for the execution of Musa, and Musa’s execution was the only way forward. In return, the Spies would either order Lyon executed or make him pakhan, but it was the only smart move he had left.

Roman clasped his hands behind his back. “I have a few loyal men, men who would do my bidding without speaking to my father.”

“That’s all I need.”

Roman hesitated. “I fear when I call in the favor, you’ll regret so simple an ask.”

Lyon shook his head. “I know what I’m getting into.”

Overthrowing Igor would be a gargantuan task made more complicated by the fact that Roman would be seen as disloyal to his father, but that was another problem for another day. As boss of the Chicago territory, Lyon would have all the resources he needed to help Roman in New York.

But first he had to win the throne.

“And you can trust your man?” Roman’s eyes drifted to Alek, standing with Roman’s two guards near one of the other walls, their eyes on Roman and Lyon.

“With my life.” If Alek had wanted to betray Lyon, he could have done so at any time since Lyon had been exiled. Instead, Alek had risked everything to back him.

Roman held out his hand. “Contact me when you’re ready.”

Lyon shook his hand. “Thank you.”

Roman turned to leave and the two guards peeled away from Alek to catch up with him.

Alek came to stand next to him. “Is he in?”

Lyon watched Roman and the two guards turn the corner onto the boardwalk. “He’s in.”
