He glanced at it. “I’m sorry. I have to take this. Will you be okay while I go get your tea?”

“I’ll be fine,” she said. Her pain meds were wearing off, and she was all too alert, all too aware of her pain. She would take more after her bath and then she would sleep.

“I’ll be right back.”

He left the room and she leaned back into the water, letting it cover her bruised and battered body. Something unfamiliar bubbled up from the center of her body, a feeling she couldn’t place at first, something warm and comforting.

She found the word a second later: safety.

It was crazy, especially now, but she felt safe. For the first time in a long time.

She closed her eyes. Musa wouldn’t hurt her again. Wouldn’t hurt her child.

Their child.

She didn’t know the details, didn’t know what Lyon had planned, but the knowledge was as sure as her own heartbeat.

As sure as his.

Lyon stepped into the hall and answered the phone. “What did you find out?”

“It’s a town,” Alek said on the other end of the line. “Well, not even a town. Blackhawk is unincorporated. But it’s got some people living there, although not many. It’s on the Mississippi.”

“And?” Lyon asked. There was more. There had to be more or Alek wouldn’t be calling him on the day Lyon brought Kira home from the hospital.

“Most of the houses up there are old, shacks really, and they’ve been in the same families a long time. Titles are easy to trace. Except for one.”

“One?”

“Yep, there are only a handful of places that have changed ownership in the past two years, and only one that was purchased by an LLC that led to another LLC that led to an untraceable shell company registered in Dubai,” Alek said. “And get this.”

“Tell me.”

“It’s a cabin,” Alek said. “An actual log cabin.”

“Is that it?”’ Lyon kept his voice even, not wanting to betray his excitement.

“Is that it?” Alek sounded wounded. “Of course not. I sent Markus and Luka up there this morning with a drone. It’s him. Musa is there. Confirmed.”

“Is he alone?” Lyon asked.

“He was at first, but I told Markus and Luka to stay and make sure he didn’t leave, and two other men showed up this afternoon.”

“I’ll meet you at the warehouse in two hours. Tell Markus and Luka it’s their heads if they lose him.” Lyon wouldn’t have a repeat of what had happened in the fall when Musa gave them the slip and killed Kira’s father. “And Alek?”

“Yeah?”

“Don’t tell another soul.” Lyon still felt burned by Chaban. He was relatively sure they’d plugged the leak, but he wouldn’t take a single chance this time. If word got out, there would only be only three possibilities within their organization: Alek, Luka, and Markus.

And no way would Alek ever burn him.

He hung up the phone, scrolled through his contacts, and dialed again.

“Didn’t expect to hear from you so soon.” Ronan Murphy’s voice was low and friendly.

“Were you serious? About the men?” Lyon asked.
