“And your ex-boyfriend,” Nathan shot back.

“Fine.” This was an argument between two lawyers, one of many reasons their marriage didn’t work. Neither side would give an inch, and they both had to have the last word, as if they were delivering closing arguments every time they had a disagreement. “The point is, I invited Logan to stay in the guest room. He was sleeping in his car across the street to keep an eye on the house.”

“Sounds like his job,” Nathan said.

“Yes, and why make his job harder than it has to be?” Gabriella asked. “I’d think you’d feel better having him in the house where he can act fast if there’s a problem.”

“Oh, I’m sure he’s acting fast,” Nathan said.

“You’re being childish. This is best for me and Leo and that’s all that should matter.”

Nathan shook his head. “That’s an oversimplification and I think you know it.”

“Look, the bottom line is, you don’t get to decide. This is my house,” she said.

“And Leo is my son too,” Nathan said. “I have a right to know who’s sleeping in the house with him.”

She took a deep breath, trying to talk herself down, to be reasonable in the interest of keeping things nice for Leo. “You’re right. I should have told you — not asked you, told you — that I’d invited Logan to use the guest room. I’m sorry.”

Was there anything harder than apologizing to your ex?

“So that’s it? Logan’s staying in the house?”

“For now,” Gabriella said.

“Are you sleeping with him?” Nathan asked.

Her cheeks flamed and anger swelled in her chest. “That’s none of your business.”

“We agreed — ”

“We agreed we’d each let the other one know if we got serious with someone that would be around Leo,” she finished.

“And?”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “And I’m not serious with anyone who is around Leo. Not right now.”

It wasn’t a lie.

They stood there for a long moment, staring each other down.

“Fine,” he finally said.

“Is there anything else?” she asked.

He shook his head and she moved to open the door.

“Actually there is one more thing,” he said behind her.

She turned. “What?”

“If Logan is here, why do you need the two goons on the corner?”

“They’re not goons. Beck and Ryker are nice men, heavily trained and qualified to protect us from Baranov.”

She stepped into the house, glad he didn’t call her on the fact that she hadn’t answered his question. She couldn’t, because she’d asked herself the same question and could only come up with one answer: Logan wanted to be there.

And she wanted him there too.
