After that, he’d taken his time, spreading her out on the bed in the guest bedroom, not wanting to make love to her in the same room where she’d once slept with Nathan. He’d explored her body properly, stroking and licking and fucking her until she’d come twice more, until he’d come with her, both of them oblivious to anything but the joining of their bodies, too long apart.

On the other hand, it was Sunday, and Ella was at that very moment on the way to the park for her weekly date with Nathan and Leo, an attempt at family normalcy in spite of the divorce.

Logan had left before Nathan arrived, both because Ella had asked him to and because he had no desire to watch the woman he loved — and he was past the point of denying he still loved her, even if he didn’t know how it would end — play house with the man who’d once been lucky enough to share her life.

A dangerous wave of possession rolled through him. He wanted what Nathan had once had — sleepy movie nights on the couch with Ella and Leo, Saturday morning pancakes, Sundays at the park.

He shook the images from his mind as he drove through the city, but they were only replaced with images from the night before: Ella’s creamy thighs damp and open, the taste of her pussy on his tongue, her flushed cheeks as she came, her mouth wrapped around his cock.

He stifled a groan, hard again, his cock pressing against his jeans.

Being with Ella was everything he remembered it to be and more. She was just as passionate, just as responsive, their bodies moving in perfect time.

But she was a woman now, a woman who knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to take it.

And that was sexy as fuck.

He sighed. It was going to be a long day, a long couple of months. They’d talked about Leo before he left that morning, Ella sleepy and spent in Logan’s arms, and had decided it would be best to keep their relationship quiet for now.

Leo had been through a lot with the divorce, and Ella hadn’t dated at all since then. Left unsaid was the uncertainty of their future together and the unfairness of letting Leo think their relationship was permanent when they were a long way from figuring out that part.

His heart squeezed at the thought of losing her a second time, but he couldn’t think about that now, couldn’t let it ruin what they had in the here and now.

Whatever it was, whatever it would be, it was real. That would have to be enough.

He was relieved to arrive back at the apartment. He needed something to take his mind off Ella, and work was the perfect remedy. He said hello to Mauz and Holt, barely awake and nursing hangovers from the looks of it, and headed for the shower.

He assumed Max and August were sleeping off the night shift, and Beck and Ryker had been parked on Ella’s street when he’d left that morning. Ford was probably on his way back to the house to work on the security upgrade.

By the time he changed into fresh jeans and a clean T-shirt, Logan felt ready to tackle business, ready to lose himself in the myriad details required to keep Ella and Leo safe, not to mention the extra thought they had to put into Leo’s field trip.

He poured himself a cup of coffee and sat at the dining room table where Mauz was nursing a steaming mug and reading the newspaper.

“Kicking it old school,” Logan said, referring to the paper.

Mauz grunted. “Trying to clear my head.”

“Rough night?” Logan asked.

“Just beers at a bar around the corner, but I swear, I must be getting old. I can’t keep up with the newbies anymore,” Mauz said.

Logan smiled. “Holt drink you under the table?”

“Something like that, and to add insult to injury, the motherfucker is perky as a sunflower this morning.” Mauz took a drink of coffee. “Went to see if he could find a pickup game in the park if you can believe it.”

“He has his phone?” Logan asked. They were all on duty, all the time. That was part of the deal when you were assigned to a case.

“He’s got it,” Mauz said. “Knows he better answer like a good little soldier if we call.”

“Good,” Logan said. “Let’s talk about the field trip.”

“I’ll go get the plans,” Mauz said, rising to his feet.

He returned a few minutes later with a long roll of paper tucked under his arm.

“Tanaka have any trouble?” Logan asked as Mauz spread out the Shedd Aquarium’s building plans.

“Not that I know of,” Mauz said, holding down the corners with his coffee cup and three apples from a basket that sat in the middle of the dining room table. “The guy’s a fucking wizard.”
