“Well, you’re back home for the first time in a long time, and it kind of seems like you and Logan are… close again,” Willow said.

“Are you fishing for details on whether Logan and I are sleeping together?” Gabriella asked.

“Come on,” Willow said. “You’re fulfilling my little sister fantasies just by having an adult conversation with me right now.”

“I’m taking Leo to the beach to feed the seagulls,” Bea said, sticking her head out onto the patio. “I might stop at the market. Need anything?’

“I’m good,” Gabriella said. “Jag’s driving right?”

They’d taken all the same precautions since arriving in California that they’d been taking in Chicago, but Gabriella had to admit she felt safer here.

“Of course, Jag is driving,” Bea said. “The big lug doesn’t let either of us out of his sight. I’m about to take a trip to Cougartown, take advantage of all his attention.”

Willow laughed. “Don’t let Jag hear you say that. He’s pretty fond of Cougartown.”

Bea’s brow furrowed. “You don’t say…”

“Oh my god… please,” Gabriella begged.

“I’m going,” Bea said. “Be back soon.”

“Don’t feed the seagulls, Bea!” Willow called after her. She turned back to Gabriella. “I love her.”

“She’s great, but I’d rather not think of her having sex with Jag in the Range Rover,” Gabriella said.

“You don’t have to. Jag would definitely treat her to a nice hotel. He’s a real gentleman,” Willow said.

“Very funny.”

“I’m not trying to be funny,” Willow said. “So?”

“So what?” Gabriella asked.

“You and Logan. Are you a thing again?” Willow asked.

Gabriella chewed her lip. “I don’t know. It’s complicated.”

“That’s a boring, grown-up answer,” Willow said.

Gabriella smiled. “Sorry to disappoint you, but I’m a boring grown-up now.”

“You? Never.” Willow reached across the space between the chairs and took Gabriella’s hand. “Seriously, Ella. You doing okay?”

Gabriella took a deep breath, letting the briny air of the ocean clear her lungs and head. “I’m okay. It’s just an adjustment being back.”

“How much longer will you stay?” Willow asked.

“I don’t know yet,” Gabriella said. “Logan and Hawk are working on it, trying to figure out what it will take for us to be safe in Chicago. There’s a chance I’ll have to leave Leo and Bea here for the trial.”

She hated the thought. Leo’s abduction had left her with a not-insignificant amount of trauma. It was hard for her to let Leo out of her sight, even when he was with Bea or Logan, but she wouldn’t take him back to Chicago if it wasn’t safe, even if it meant going toe-to-toe with Nathan.

And it might.

This time, she would do the right thing, the safe thing, no matter what.

“Well, I hope it’s for awhile at least. I know you have to work, but I’ve missed you, and Logan seems…”

Gabriella lifted her eyebrows.
