“I remember that too, but Ella…”

He’d brought her here to talk to her, to tell her what had happened in Chicago. She had less than twenty-four hours to make a decision. He wanted her to have every second.

“You’re thinking too hard again,” she said, sliding her shorts off her body and kicking them away. She reached behind her and unsnapped her bra, tossed it aside, and slipped off her underwear.

His heart caught in his throat at the sight of her naked body. And his heart wasn’t the only thing responding.

“Come on,” she said, turning for the water and looking at him over her bare shoulder. He followed the line of her spine with his eyes, her tapered waist and lavish hips, the swell of her pillowy ass and the inviting shadow between her thighs. “What are you waiting for?”

He threw down the blanket he’d brought for them to sit on, then stripped off his clothes. He was halfway to the water when he saw her dive under a wave. It curled over her body and he waded into the surf, scanning the water until he saw her head bobbing on the surface beyond the break.

He dove in and emerged a few feet away, then swam to where she floated on her back, drops of water clinging to her breasts.

She righted herself and smiled at him through the dark. It was like traveling back in time, Ella’s face clear and bright, minus the serious expression she wore when she was working, her hair slicked back from her forehead.

The water was chest deep, the soft swells occasionally lifting her off her feet as they rolled in toward the beach. He reached for her and she slipped her arms around his neck and wrapped her legs around his waist.

“This is nice,” she said. “We should have done this sooner.”

His body responded to the heat at her core in spite of the cool water that surrounded their bodies. “I agree. In fact, we can do this every night if you want.”

She grinned. “Now that’s different from when we were kids.”

“What do you mean?” he asked, savoring the slide of her wet skin against his body, the buoyant weight of her in his arms.

She laughed. “You were so shy back then.”

“The older we got, the more you terrified me,” he said.

She looked genuinely surprised. “What? Why?”

“You were the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. I didn’t think I deserved you.” He swallowed the emotion that rose in his throat. “I’m still not sure I do.”

She shook her head, her expression suddenly serious. “You’ve always deserved everything.” She reached up and pushed a lock of wet hair from his forehead. “Don’t you know that?”

He thought about the meeting he’d had with Lyonya Antonov, the way he’d gone behind her back to have it, and guilt roiled in his stomach.

She kissed the corners of his mouth before slipping her tongue inside.

His body took over, and he crushed her mouth under his, their tongues cold and salty as they parried.

She tightened her thighs around him, nestling him more closely against her warmth, and his cock hardened and lengthened against her sex.

He cupped her ass and she leaned back in the water, let her head drift on the surface as he kissed his way down her throat and chest. He took one of her nipples in his mouth and sucked, desire building in his stomach as she gasped.

A small wave moved under and through them, lifting them both off the sea floor. The sensation worked together with the need pounding in Logan’s veins and his stomach dropped away, the world spinning as he lapped at her nipple.

She put her arms back around his neck and kissed him. “I want you inside me,” she said against his mouth.

He carried her toward the beach, working with the rhythm of the waves, stopping to kiss her when the current tried to pull them back out to sea, letting the surf push them toward shore as it rolled toward the sand.

He scanned the beach, not wanting to expose Ella’s naked body if someone had happened along while they were in the water. Despite the cove’s distance from the walking path and the lights that illuminated it at night, other people sometimes made their way to its sheltered beach, usually for the same reason Logan and Ella were there.

But tonight, it was quiet, the lights of the more populated beaches to the north shimmering like an oasis in the distance.

Their clothes had left a trail from the water’s edge to the blanket Logan had left in a heap. He attempted to spread it out without dropping her, then stumbled, barely managing to hold her aloft.

They were both laughing, everything forgotten but their desire and their comical attempts at fulfilling it.
