Trust no one,has always been my motto, and it’s never done me wrong. Either way, I need to stay away from Killian for now and just hope he doesn’t get in the way of my plans.

Sexy as he is, he can only be a distraction. Plus, he’s much too goody-goody for me.

A slow smile spreads on my face as I walk down the hall.

One down, four to go.

Chapter Seven

Don’t Fear The Reaper

Echo

The first thing I notice when I get to work is that Killian isn’t behind the bar. I only have a moment to wonder where he might be before Pedro sends me upstairs to see Neil. When I asked why, he only shook his head and said I’d better hurry up and get up there. My mouth feels like it's full of cotton as I head up the stairs toward Neil’s office.

I managed to get a few hours of sleep before this, so I only look like half-baked hell instead of an absolute mess. Thank fuck for cover-up. Even still, I’m not nearly prepared enough for this right now. This is all going too fast yet too slow, I’m being sloppy. I need to get my head back in the game.

I stand up as straight as I can before entering the room to find Peter and James both lounging. Dee is standing in the corner with Neil at his desk. Peter looks worse for the wear, and I assume he hasn’t slept.

“Dude, what are you doing?”

“Just another hit, man, then I’m jumping in,” Peter replies. I hear a snorting sound a moment before his face comes in front of mine.

“Take a hit, maybe it’ll help,” he teases as he shoves something underneath my nose. I inhale instinctively and my nostrils burn. He was right, though. It did help and by the time he was on top of me, I barely felt it.

“Come in,” Neil says, standing and gesturing to the seat in front of him. An icy chill runs up my spine but I reason he wouldn’t do anything with Dee here, at least. So I do as he says, keeping the clueless look on my face as best as I can.

“What’s going on, sugar?” I ask with a smile, adding an extra eye bat for effect.

“Pete says you were with Serg and them last night, that true?”

I let my eyes widen a touch as I nod. “Yeah, we were partyin’.”

Neil looks up to Dee and nods his head toward the door. I hide a swallow as she leaves.I can’t get found out now, not after just one.

“You left everyone else, what did you guys do then?” his dark eyes stare into mine, I assume to see if I’ll lie. Unlucky for him, I’m well practiced at this art.

“Ummm, went back upstairs for a bit longer, then I left and went home. Why, baby, what’s going on?” I urge, figuring that if I didn’t know I’d be getting curious about these questions about now.

Neil frowns at me but doesn’t answer. Instead, he looks up to Pete. Something passes between them, and both he and James leave the room. Neil says nothing, his eyes falling back on me and staying there until they’re both gone.

“You wouldn’t lie to me, would you, sugar?” he says, his voice low with warning. I let my eyes widen again.

“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about. What’s going on?”

Neil’s eyes burn into me and I meet his gaze steadily despite my insides screaming. I let out a sigh of relief when he looks away, turning back to his desk.

“Get downstairs and get ready for your shift,” he says, not looking back up. I stand and start to make my way to the door.

“And Echo?”

I pause, turning to him.

“Stick around tonight. I want to see you after-hours.”

I swallow deeply but smile and nod before closing the door behind me.

My mind is still whirling an hour later as Arturo curses me for the third time about moving.
