"What do you want?" I said in a short tone, folding my arms. "Don't you have plans to make?"

Gid laughed, his tone so full of evil, I had to wonder if he even had a soul.

"Already sorted. Never send an amateur to do a professional's job. Cottee was weak. But don't worry, we'll relieve you of your duties soon."

I kept my face still and void of emotion. "And how do you plan on doing that?"

Gid smirked, giving his sister a smug look as she approached us. "We're going to pay little Blair a visit. Jenks does love a good game of cat and mouse."

"Levi, you look… average," Rina muttered, giving me a bored expression. "I would have thought getting your dick wet would at least give you some hint of a personality boost."

"What the fuck are you on about?" I asked, my jaw twitching.

Rina gave a short laugh. "You're awfully close to Blair's friend. Quinn, is it?"

Panic filled me but I couldn't let them know that. I had no idea that they knew about that, and I wanted to kick myself for putting Quinn on their radar more than necessary.

"So?" I responded, feigning boredom. "Why do you care?"

Gid stepped forward, sizing me up. "We're watching all the time, Levi. I hope you know what you're doing. I would hate for you to…get attached."

They both started laughing, walking off while throwing final sly grins at me. My fists were curled into tight balls in my hoodie pockets, as I resisted the urge to do something that would end badly.

"I fucking hate them," Benny said, appearing next to me. "Bunch of assholes."

"Yeah, same here," I muttered, making sure we were out of earshot of anyone.

Benny lowered his voice, giving me a concerned look. "You aren't, are you?"

"What?" I looked at him with confusion.

He checked around us, leaning in closer. "Attached?"

I could see the worry in his eyes, so for both our benefits, I forced a smile.

"No, bro. I'm not attached to them. I'm just doing my job."

The wind was knocked out of me as Blair collided with my back, her arms circling my body as she pressed herself in for a hug.

"Hi, stranger. I haven't seen you for a bit," I laughed, looking over my shoulder.

We were standing by Quinn's car, excited for the impending break. It was so good to see them both, and Blair looked so much happier than usual.

Quinn offered us smokes, which I happily took. It's nice to just chat normally and pretend that life was normal for a second.

We decided to head to Oreo's to get some food, the three of us keen to catch up. Before I could even reach for the handle, a car door slammed nearby, catching all our attentions.

Collectively, we turned towards the noise and my heart paused as I spotted Xanderson staring at me. Well, more like he was staring at Blair's hand on me.

Blair quickly dropped her hand, and I looked at her confused. She seemed to think that the Spades had some hold over her. I had to wonder if anything physical had happened. Blair didn't seem like the type to fuck random guys, let alone them… but I couldn't be so certain anymore.

She was imploding, being drawn into their danger. Quinn could sense it too, her nervous laughter breaking the silence.

"Levi, you sexy bastard. Reed was eyeing you off."

"I think I'm in the bad books. Blair, you are trouble."

Blair at least had the sense to look offended. I genuinely believed she had no idea what she was doing, but still. It was a game she shouldn't be playing.
