Page 26 of Trista's Truth

“Don’t trust Pete, Joel,” she said, “he’s working with Dante, I’m sure of it.”

“You just get out of there,” Joel insisted, “you good?” She looked down at her shoulder, the way that the blood was already soaking her shirt, and she nodded. She was going to have to lie to him, otherwise, Joel would give up on going after Dante and Pete to help her. She’d be fine but letting them go would be a complete waste.

“I’m good,” she lied, “just find Dante and Pete.”

Joel

Joel couldn’t believethat Peter had double-crossed them all. He had put Trista in danger, and now, he was getting away with Dante. His first instinct was to go to Trista and help her, but there was no way that he’d let Dante get away again, especially now that they knew that Pete was helping him. Joel knew that his girl was tough—he just hoped like hell that she’d be able to handle the shit show that her brother had sent her into.

“You had no idea that Trista’s brother was a double agent?” Melody asked.

“None,” Joel admitted. “Trista believed her brother too, although, I’m guessing that had more to do with wanting to believe him. She wanted him to be alive and okay so that she could bring him back to her parents, but now, that might not happen.”

“You know what we’ll have to do if he gives us any fight, right?” Melody asked.

“I do, and that’s why I’m glad that we’re going after him and not Trista,” he admitted. “I just hope that she’s okay.” The gunfire had stopped ringing out from the upstairs room and there was still no sign of Trista or her team, and that had him worried.

“I’m sure she is,” Melody whispered. “From what I know about Trista, she seems very capable of landing on her feet in any circumstance.” Melody was right, but he still worried that Trista was keeping something from him when she told him to go after her brother.

They turned the corner and Joel stopped dead when he found Peter standing in the middle of the hallway, holding a gun that was pointed right at him and Melody. “End of the line, guys,” he said.

“You don’t have to do this Pete,” Joel insisted. “Just let us take in Dante and I’m sure that the CIA will strike a deal with you for your cooperation.”

“We both know that’s not true,” Peter insisted. “As soon as I turn over Dante, you’ll put me in a cell with him and toss away the key. I have my orders. We need to get the women and Dante out, at any cost.”

“Even your sister’s life?” Melody spat. “You sent her into that office up there knowing that she’d be facing a firing squad. How could you do that to your own sister?”

“I’m not in charge of my sister or the decisions that she makes,” Peter defended. “She chose to go into that office. I didn’t send her anywhere.”

“You set her up, and now, we don’t know if she’s dead or alive,” Joel shouted.

Peter shrugged and Joel wanted to tear the asshole apart for what he had just done to Trista. “If she’s dead, you are too, Pete,” Joel said.

“I don’t really do empty threats,” Peter said. “I mean, I am the one holding the gun and it’s pointed right at you, man,” he said.

Joel couldn’t help his laugh when he saw Trista round the corner with two of her men. “And Trista is holding a gun and it’s pointed right at you,” he said nodding at her.

“Good try, asshole,” Peter said. “But I’m not letting my guard down and turning around so that you can get the drop on me.”

“Suit yourself,” Joel said. Trista stood directly behind her brother and when she poked her gun into his back, Pete’s gasp filled the small corridor.

“You okay, honey?” Joel asked. He saw the blood that had soaked her shirt and could tell that she had probably been hit in the shoulder.

“I will be as soon as I take care of this trash,” Trista spat.

“I’m your brother, Trista,” Peter insisted.

“My brother died months ago. My parents and I buried him, and they’ll never know that you lied to them. They will never experience the pain and disappointment that their son turned into a traitor. As far as I’m concerned, Pete, you’ve been dead this whole time.” Hearing Trista say those words to her brother broke Joel’s heart for her. She was so cold and calculated, but he knew that she was dying on the inside. He'd have to help her deal with all of that later. Right now, he needed to bring down Dante and get Trista some medical attention for her shoulder.

As if she could read his mind, Trista looked around her brother to Joel and nodded. “You and Melody go after Dante. Don’t let him go,” Trista ordered.

“Be careful, honey,” Joel said.

“I always am,” she promised. “Cuff him and let’s get him into the car. I’m not giving my snake of a brother another chance to get away. He’s going to spend the rest of his miserable life in prison.”

He knew better than to get in Trista’s way. He also knew that she was capable of handling her brother. “Ready?” he asked Melody.
