Page 5 of Trista's Truth

“I’ll just need to put the order in on my laptop,” he said. “It’s a bit of paperwork, but it shouldn’t take too long. You want coffee or anything?” he asked.

“I’m good,” Trista said, looking around the place. “I just want to get this over with.” He felt the same way, but she seemed a bit more nervous than he felt. “Do you know all of these people?” she asked.

Joel quickly looked around the place and back to her, nodding. “Pretty much. I mean, I don’t recognize some of the people in custody right now, but the officers, I know well. Why?” he asked.

“Just making sure that we’re safe is all,” she said. Joel sat down behind his desk and Trista stood in the corner, against the wall as if to keep an eye on everyone around them.

“You know, you can have a seat,” he offered.

“I’m good,” she said.

“Right, because you’re not garnering any extra attention by standing back in the corner like that, honey,” he mumbled under his breath.

“I heard that,” Trista whispered. “And I’m not your honey.”

“Noted,” he said. Joel found the forms that he needed to send over to the prison to get Dante Gemini released. “Once I hit send, this will happen pretty quickly. Is your guy in place?” he asked. Having one of her men pose as a precinct lawyer to meet Dante and tell him that they had made a mistake was brilliant. A guy as smart as Dante would want an explanation and telling him that they had fucked up was a good one. He’d believe that because there was no way that Dante would ever accept his own faults or failures.

“He’s there now, waiting for my order to go in. You just give the word, and I’ll send him in,” Trista said. “We’ll be able to hear and see everything on my phone. My guy is wired, and I have access to the video footage at the prison.” She pulled her phone out and send her guy a message to be ready and sat on the edge of his desk. “Ready for the show?” she asked.

“As I’ll ever be,” he assured. Honestly, he wasn’t ready for any of this, but ready or not, this mess was coming for him, and he needed to get ready if he planned on staying alive.

Trista

“My guy saysthat he’s in the holding cell, waiting for them to bring in Dante,” Trista said, reading his text message out loud.

“Are you sure that this will work?” Joel asked.

“Not a clue, but it’s all we have to go on. We need for Dante to believe that it’s safe for him to resume business as usual, or we’re all fucked. We will have let out a man who’s guilty as hell, for nothing. We can’t let that happen.”

“We won’t let that happen,” Joel assured. “I promise. I fucked this up and now, I plan on helping to fix it.”

“Shh,” she said, nodding to her phone, “they just brought Dante into the room. I want to listen.” Joel stood next to her, and she held her phone between the two of them, so he could watch with her.

“Who the hell are you?” Dante asked her agent, Ed Adams, who was posing as a lawyer.

“I’m one of the lawyers here on staff for the correctional facility,” Ed said.

“What do you want?” Dante asked. “I’m not going to talk to you without my lawyer here, so you’re wasting your time if that’s what you’re after.”

“It’s not,” Ed said, “I’m here to let you know that you are being released.” Dante looked Ed over as if he didn’t believe a word that he was saying, and Trista couldn’t blame the guy. She’d be skeptical too if she was being released for no reason.

“Why would you all just let me go?” Dante asked. “When I was arrested, I was told that the plan was to toss me in a cell and throw away the key. What’s changed?” Dante asked.

“While we were building our case against you, our team realized that there were mistakes made in your arrest that won’t stand up in court. It’s enough to get your case dismissed, and we have no choice but to let you go.”

“Mistakes,” Dante repeated, “I should have known. So, I’m getting out of here because the guy who arrested me fucked up?”

“You could say that,” Ed agreed, “although we’d never admit to that in court. It’s why we’re willing to just release you now and save all of us the time and energy of a court case.”

“I see,” Dante said, “so, I’m just free to leave? I mean, I don’t have to check in with anyone, or any of that shit?”

“Nothing else will be required of you,” Ed said, “we'll get the paperwork ready, and you’ll be free to go within the hour. For now, you’ll be taken back to your cell to await discharge.”

“All right then,” Dante said. The guy looked happier than a kid who got what he asked for on Christmas morning. He had no clue that he was being set up, and that’s just the way that they needed to keep it.

“Will you pass on a message to the officer who arrested me?” Dante asked.

“Um sure,” Ed promised. Trista looked Joel over, worried about what Dante was about to say.
