Texts I knew for a fact hadn’t come from her dad.

I pressed the buttons to call Pavlov, and strode through the doors out into the night. The wind was brutal, slamming into me the moment I stepped out. I lowered my head, fighting the force, and kept on walking.

“Yeah?” he answered on the third ring.

“Is he secure?”

“Yeah, he’s secure. Everything okay?” Concern etched his words.

I tried to keep the bite of frustration and anger from my words, but it was fucking useless. “Where the fuck are you right now?”

A grunt came in the background, then the choppy slap of the waves as he battled the wind as my bodyguard answered. “We’re just getting off the boat and heading for the building now.”

Kat…she said she was going to Kat…

Was it all just a lie?

I sucked in hard breaths and tried to think like her. Maybe the texts were from Kat? Maybe Kat somehow had an unknown fucking number and maybe that warning in my gut was right.

“Everything okay?” Pavlov barked. “Something I should know about?”

Something I should know about. It was the same words Max had used. The same fucking words my father used. The same words that said only one thing.I wasn’t fucking trusted to handle things on my own.

“No,” I answered. “Text me when he’s secure, and Pavlov.”

“Yeah?”

“You haven’t spoken to anyone about this, have you?”

“Not a fucking word. Just like you instructed.”

“Good…” I exhaled hard, losing that flare of anger, and kept on walking. “Good.”

“I’ll text when he’s secure,” Pavlov repeated, then hung up.

I lifted my gaze to the lights of the buildings as a bolt of lightning speared the sky in the distance. A damn storm was coming. I tucked my phone into my pocket, my steps slowing on their own, and stopped. Something was nagging me, some flare of instinct in my gut.

That same instinct made me turn my head and lift my gaze to the windows of my apartment. Through the expansive glass, I caught movement. My gut clenched…Anna.I almost turned around, almost took off at a sprint back to the fucking building…almost stepped out of the damn shadows of building one.

But it wasn’t Anna at all…

I watched as Max stepped into our bedroom and moved around the bed. I knew exactly what he was seeing. Anna’s open suitcase filled full of her belongings, and the rumpled sheets, the air still heady with the scent of sex. But that wasn’t what he was after…he left the bedroom and moved into the office, turned the light on, and closed the door.

My gut clenched and panic raged, mingling with the low growl in the clouds overhead. He was in the fucking office, and I was betting that right now he was trying the combinations of the safe. The combination I'd changed at the very last minute. My phone lit up as I stood there.

Max: Fin, everything okay?

I clenched my jaw tight and turned away.

Max: Do you need an escort?

I tore my gaze from the text and focused on the building in the distance. I knew exactly what he was doing. The sonofabitch was watching me at all damn times, sneaking into my apartment when he thought I wasn’t watching. There was only one reason to betray me like that…and that was for my father.

Don’t you think your father should know about this?

How many damn times had he said those words? Too many to count. That cold-seated anger burned inside me as I stepped up to the scanner, swiped my card, and the doors opened. But that’s where I stopped, as two massive bodyguards rose from their seats.

“I need to see him,” I growled.
