Clean-shaven, he was dressed in a black turtleneck under a steel-gray suit. A scar savaged one cheek. But it was his dark, hooded stare that made most people silent. He barely moved. If not for the faint rise and fall of his chest, I’d assume the male was dead standing up.

But it was the assassin I cared more about. Right now, I cared about one thing. Who was the real target and was it connected to my mom?

His arms were bound behind him, his wetsuit pants still on. One of my men, Pavlov, stood with three of the island’s permanent staff enforcers. His sea-sprayed hair was still damp from the boat. His stony stare and bloodied knuckles told me he'd gotten to the bastard. But did he find out what we wanted without the Commander knowing? He lifted his gaze to mine, and without speaking, that savage stare gave me the damn answer.No.

One nod from the Commander and the hood was yanked free, leaving the hitman to blink and stare around the room.

I didn’t know him…

“Do you know who I am?”

A chill raced through the room. Slowly, the asshole strapped to the chair lifted his head and leveled blue eyes at that unflinching stare. But I saw the flicker of recognition, that second where his breath stilled and his eyes widened. Yeah, he knew who the Commander was.

“If you do, then you know you broke the Code.” That chilling tone spilled through the basement. “So, I’m going to ask you once…and only once, and you are going to tell me what I want to know. Who sent you?”

“I didn’t break any fucking Code,” he grunted. “Wasn’t on the island, so it’s not your goddamn business, is it?”

The Commander took a step closer and bent down, staring into his eyes. “The second thatboatleft the mainland, you made itmy business. You know the rules of the Commission. You know the fucking island is subject to this rule. No one spills blood under my watch. That rule is sworn to by every fucking member who has a damn seat. You fuckingknowthat…and if you don’t, that means you’re not one of us…and there’s no protecting you.”

Silence.

Sometimes it spoke louder than words.

I was betting that right then, he was mentally calculating all the loved ones he’d leave behind.

“Don’t bother trying to think of a way out of this.” The Commander reached out, palm up.

One of the enforcers placed a gun, silencer attached, in his hand.

“Now I can make this painless…or you can die screaming. The choice is yours.”

“Fuck you,” the asshole snarled.

One nod was all it took. My gut clenched. Not yet!The words raged inside my head. “The target.” I forced the words through clenched teeth. “Who was it?”

Anna’s face rose from the darkness of my mind. If he said her name, I’d kill him here and now, Commander or not. I’d do what I'd been sent here for…find her goddamn contact and kill them. No matter who stood in my damn way.

“Baldeon,” he finally answered, but his eyes sparkled with the lie.

My stomach tightened. “I don’t believe you.”

But the comment went unanswered.

“Who was your employer?”the Commander barked.

I flinched at the savagery.

“You know I can’t give you that.”

“The way I see it, you have two options,” the Commander growled, aiming the gun at the bastard’s groin. One of the enforcers paled and looked away. Jesus, the bastard'sballs?

“You don’t want to tell me? Fine, I’ll make sure your mother knows what a spineless piece of shit you were before I blow her fucking brains out.”

An icy touch snaked along my spine. He’d do it, too. I’d heard stories, ones that made me sick to my fucking stomach.

“You think they’d send someone who had any family left?” The bastard chuckled, then winced with a groan. “You have no idea who these people are. They’re about to unleash a fucking shitstorm on yourpreciouslittle islandand you with it.”

He turned those bright blue eyes to me. Blue eyes that reminded me too much of a Rossi’s. Was that who'd sent him? That burn reached a little higher. I wanted to smash and break, use water to pull the goddamn truth out of his mouth along with his teeth.
