“He will if he wants out of there,” Mateo murmured. “It’s amazing what the need to survive pushes us to do. He did the impossible once before, sending you to the island to protect you, so he’ll do it again. Have faith. I’ll call you as soon as I know more…and Fin…”

“Yeah?” I answered, turning the wheel and accelerating.

“You might want to make plans.”

I swallowed hard, knowing exactly what he was saying and thought of the duffle bag loaded with guns in the back. “Already on it.”

“Lie low. I’ll call you when we’ve picked him up,” he finished.

I hung up the call, speeding the four-wheel drive along the quiet, lonely road and scanned the rearview mirror for my father’s watchers who would surely come.

I closed my eyes as Fin hung up the phone. They were going to find him…they were going to find my dad. I wrapped my arms around my body and rocked forward.

“Hey, no.” Fin placed his hand on my back, the warmth melting through my thick buttoned shirt. “Don’t fall apart on me here.”

I shook my head, fighting back tears. I'd handled a lot of shit. The Facility. The fucking guard who put his hands on me as he threatened me. I even handled Fin with his cold, Salvatore demeanor. I did it all to keep my father safe.

But that was all over…they’d find him and they’d kill him.

I just knew it.

Warmth slipped free and slipped from the corner of my eye. “I did this…Oh God. I did this.”

“No, you didn’t…I did.”

I winced.

“I was the one who killed Max in that warehouse.”

I opened my eyes, my cheeks wet and slick. “To protect me.”

He turned his gaze back to the road. “The why doesn’t matter. Now we need to find a way out of this damn mess and wait for Mateo to find your father. Because hewillfind him.”

“He’s the Commander,” I murmured.

Fin glanced my way. But he didn’t need to answer. I knew about the men in his dangerous world where he lived. I knew about them all too well. I once wanted to run from them…wanted to get as far away from them as possible.

But that was before.

I looked across the seat as he worked the gears and watched the rearview mirror, driving us where, I didn’t know. He leaned forward, hit the button on his cell. Laz’s number flashed across the screen before he answered.

“That was fast, Salvatore,” he muttered. “You in or what?”

“I have your backing?”

My pulse sped with the words.

“One hundred percent.” He growled. I could almost see the savagery in his eyes. “It’s about time for fresh blood.”

“I’m heading to the outpost.” Fin glanced at the rearview mirror, then reached under the dashboard and hit a switch. “Tracking off.”

“See you then, brother.” Laz sounded almost excited.

I just stared at where his hand had been as he pressed the button and hung up the call. A chill coursed through my body as it hit me. “You knew…you knew this was coming, didn’t you?”
