The bodyguard missed nothing.

“Not yet,” I responded. “Not until I know more.”

Kat VanHalen was at Anna’s side. The heiress was a damn rock, rubbing her arm, murmuring words I assumed were of comfort. Still, I couldn’t stop watching my little launderer, riveted by the way she wrung her hands and smoothed her dress. The same dress I’d pushed high a couple of hours before. I licked my lips. The same damn dress I wanted to take from her fucking body and show her just what she did to me.

Stop fucking running!

The roar resounded in my head.

If you’d just let me, I could make it so no one looked at you again…not unless they wanted to lose their goddamn eyes.

I'd kissed her and touched her. Christ, what a goddamn stupid fucking move. I dragged my fingers through my hair, hating how the feel of her returned in an instant. I could still feel her around my fingers, still taste her on my tongue. Perfect and sweet, like my sweet, dark secret.

“Anna,” Dillon called. His shoulders were hunched in defeat as the idea of his daughter being my private little conquest tore through me like a drug. One I fucking liked.

I turned then, finding hazel eyes. “Follow him.”

Pavlov gave a nod, his gaze shifting to the fool who, for a goddamn genius at financial rules and regulations, was surprisingly shit at reading the island’s fine print. I turned, took a step, and stopped. “First, I want you to do something.”

“Whatever you need,” the bodyguard assented.

“I want you in her room…unseen.”I gave him the command, watching as his gaze narrowed before he finally nodded.

He left, sinking into the darkness, as I focussed on Dillon Shaw once more. The guy took a panicked lunge toward his daughter and was blocked by the Commander in one swift move. He was outmaneuvered and way out of his fucking league.

He’d leave, either of his own accord or by force.

Either way, Anna wasn’t getting off this island, not anytime soon.

Max’s phone chirped. One glance from the bodyguard, and he turned my way. “Baldeon’s awake.”

Still alive? The asshole was stronger than I'd thought. “Good.”

I left Dillon Shaw then, hating how I left her, as well. But there were too many damn questions lingering in the air tonight and not anywhere near enough answers. Max followed as I made my way up the rise and across the grounds, keeping to the shadows.

The infirmary was at the back of Building One. Secure offices and electronic vaults. But it was the state-of-the-art medical facility that received the most attention, with a small and sophisticated emergency ward, that for a fucking island, was unusually busy.

But I didn’t head straight there. Instead, I made for the building further back. The one pushed against the steep, sheer cliffs of the island and the one hidden in the dark. The one permanently reserved for the Salvatores.

Finley…her moan resounded in my head as I cut through the gardens and stepped up to the scanner.

The green light was piercing in my eye for a split second before the electric doors opened and I strode in.

Let go, Anna. Let me give you this.

I clenched my jaw as the memory deepened. Max stabbed the button for the elevator and stepped away, his hands clasped in front, near the guns. But it wasn’t the fucking guard I cared about right now.

“Give me a minute,” I muttered as the elevator doors opened.

I lowered my head, stepped into the harsh lights, and waited for the doors to close. She was too fucking real for me in that moment. Too raw. Too fucking…blinding. The elevator rose, coming to a stop at the penthouse before the doors opened.

Steel clinked softly as a dark beast rose from the corner of the room.

“Leale, down.”

He sank once more, his watchful eyes following me as I strode to the bedroom. It was dark in here. My world, nothing more than shadows and sin…right where I belonged.

Finley…
