“We’ll be right downstairs then.” Max motioned to Pavlov. “One of us will be awake all night in case you need us.”

I swallowed hard and gave a nod, my breaths trapped in my chest until the moment they left and the elevator doors closed. Then there was nothing but the rush…

Nothing but the loneliness. Nothing but the call I didn’t want to make.

I needed a fucking drink first.

I stared at the counter and scowled.

There’d been a bottle of Macallan…I flinched as though slapped, remembering Baldeon.

That’s right.

I strode toward the stocked bar, grabbed a fresh bottle, and tore off the cap, spilling a little as my fucking hands shook. Still, enough hit the bottom of the tumbler before I drank. Fire lashed the back of my throat I needed that burn, chasing it like a damn drug as I poured again and swallowed.

And when the boom of my pulse quieted in my ears, I made my way over to the sofa. “Get this fucking over with,” I breathed.

I placed the bottle and the glass on the coffee table as I fished my phone free and hit the button. It rang…and rang, picked up on the third ring. “Yes?”

I winced at the cold tone.

Silence stretched before us, just like it always had.

“Baldeon’s second son is gone.”

“A hit?”

I swallowed hard. “Yeah, a hit. It was a message.”

“A message.”

Yes, a fucking message!

“And the launderer?”

I closed my eyes as Anna’s face filled my mind. I tried to force it away…but there wasn’t enough alcohol in my body to do that…yet. “There’s nothing to report.”

“I’m quickly losing my patience, Finley. Get me something or you’ll be back home. There’s still time for me to take matters into my own hands.”

My stomach rolled at the thought. “I’ll have something for you soon…and Dad—” I started, but the line was already dead, just like the connection between us, dead as the night my mother had died. “I’m okay,if you ever fucking wondered. I’m just fine.”

I lowered the phone, sliding it onto the coffee table, and filled my glass once more.

It lit up with abeep.

I barked a fucking laugh and picked it up. “You’vegotto be kidding me.”

Anna: Are you safe?

I stared at the message, blinked, shook my head, then looked again. “Am I safe?”

I grabbed the phone and took it with me as I went to the bedroom. Darkness smothered me, that message bright and glaring.Am I safe…I took a drink and sank to sit on the bed.Am I fucking safe?

I dragged my teeth across my lower lip as my thumbs moved across the screen.

Finley: Why?

A cruel smile curled my lips. Let’s see if she responds now. She won’t. I'd scared her today. Fucking terrified her—
