“There’s someone who can help us.”

The words drew me back. “What do you mean?”

Dad looked around the study, his gaze moving to the door before he grabbed my arm and pulled me closer. “Someone reached out to me, said they can get us out of this. I didn’t think they were real at first, but they sent me this.” He reached into the desk drawer and pulled out an image. It was dark…and blurry. I grabbed it and held it under the lamp, straining to see.

It was Dominic Salvatore and his bodyguards striding into some kind of room.

“That’s the Commission he’s going to, thesecret Commission.Whoever this is, they’re connected, well-connected, and they say they can get us out of this and far away fromthem.”

Fear snaked along my spine.

All I saw was the blood splatter on dad’s shirt and the panicked sound of his words.Get away from them…them being the mafia…

But I knew the men my father worked for. I knew what would happen if they even thought we were trying to get away. We weren’t family. We weren’t even friends. We were the people who washed and laundered their dirty money and we’d been doing it for a while.

“They won’t let me leave. They even have me followed.” Dad grabbed my hand. “So it has to be you, Button. It has to be you. I need you to meet with the contact. Then once you’re out, come find me.”

“Come find you?” My words sounded distant as reality set in.

I knew what he was saying now, knew what was at stake.

Maybe next time he wouldn’t come home wearing someone else’s blood on his shirt.

Maybe next time he wouldn’t come home at all.

“I’m sorry it’s all come down on your shoulders, Button.” Dad’s voice broke. “I’m just so fucking sorry.”

“It’s okay, Dad,” I murmured, my words sounding strange.

My phone lit up with a softbeepandI lowered my gaze.

Fin: Are you asleep?

Asleep? The excitement of his words now lost their shine. I lifted my gaze to the blood splatter on dad’s shirt. Finley Salvatore. The only guy who’d been remotely nice to me for two years, and the one guy I actually liked. Only now I wanted to get as far away from him as possible and keep us alive…

“It’sabout time you showed up.”

I stepped into the foyer, standing behind my dad. I said nothing, it was better that way.

“He’s stalling.” My father stared at the bright brake lights glowing in the dark as Anna’s father left the compound. Dad’s hands were fisted, bloodstained and trembling with rage as he finished. “And I want to know why.”

“I don’t think—” I started as he turned.

Heavy steps resounded in the foyer as he stepped away from the front door. A heavy smear of blood trailed from the entrance all the way to the dead body.

“Clean that up.”
