Page 38 of Monstrous Truths

“No one can find him,” someone else replies worriedly.

“Let me help,” I demand, and Cato looks at me, his brow furrowed in question.

“Our bodies are similar enough, and for fun, I got a medical degree.” I reach across and take his hand. “I can help.”

He stares into my eyes for a moment before inclining his head. Ignoring the whispers around us, I whip off my lab coat and turn to wash my hands. “We are going to need to clean him to find the wound first. I need towels, water, and antiseptic,” I demand. “Cato, you’re going to help me.”

After thoroughly washing my hands, I move back to the monster. The supplies are there, and together, we quickly clean him up, searching for the bullet wounds. I spot it in his lower abdomen and feel around the wound. “Help me turn him slightly to the left.” He does, and I peek over. “Through and through. No bullet inside of him, that’s good. It’s a bleeder, but I don’t think it nicked anything important.” I talk as I work, my hands sure and steady as I work to help this man. I feel eyes on me, but for once, I’m not nervous.

I’m confident, and when we clean, sew, and dress the wounds, I talk them through it. All the while, they stay and watch. When I’m done, I clean the rest of him before checking his horns. He passed out a little while ago, but when I prod them, he wakes up. His hands snap up to grab mine, and I freeze and look down at him. His eyes are red. Knowing Cato is ready to intervene, I hold up my hand to stop him.

All he sees is an enemy, so I keep my voice soft. “It’s okay. It’s Talia. I’m just helping you. You are safe, you are okay.” I repeat it until he drops my hand and his eyes fade back to black.

“Sorry,” he croaks out.

“Don’t be,” I tell him as I inspect the wounds. “You are going to be okay,” I promise. “You are doing so well. You’ll need to rest, no monster activities for a while, but otherwise, you’ll be okay.” I pat his arm in reassurance.

“Yes?” he asks, afraid.

“Yes.” I nod as I clean some minor cuts, and when I’m happy he’s okay, I look back to his face and smile. “You are going to be okay,” I assure him once more, knowing he probably needs to hear it. I squeeze his hand and meet his pained yet relieved eyes. “I promise. Do you want any pain relief?” He hesitates, embarrassment in his eyes, and I lean in so only he can hear me. “There is no shame in it, but if you don’t want the others to see, I can sneak it.”

He softens and nods, and I quickly hide the syringe before plunging it into his arm. Soon enough, he’s asleep. Good. He needs rest. Stepping back, I sigh, my shoulders sagging with exhaustion now that the adrenaline has worn off. My bloodied hands and arms hang limply at my sides, and when I glance up, I meet Cato’s eyes. They are burning bright red and locked on me.

Swallowing, I look away and meet the confused gaze of Cato’s brother. Without a word, he slips away, but not before I see him nod in respect.

“Come on, you need to clean up,” Cato murmurs, taking my hand, his own covered in blood as well.

“But—” I start, looking back at my patient.

“Someone will stay with him and call if you are needed. I promise.” When I agree, he leads me away, telling his people to take watch. We head upstairs hand in hand, all my anger at him lying to me gone with what I just saw and did.

The truth of the humans.

We hurt and kill these innocent people who are just trying to survive. I’m glad I could help, but it doesn’t lessen my anger over it happening in the first place. I stay silent, lost in my head, and so does Cato. He’s probably worried about his people.

When we are back upstairs, he leads me to the bathroom, kissing my hand softly. “Get undressed and showered. I’ll be back in a minute. I’m just going to check the border reports and ask for some food.”

I watch him go before stripping off my clothes. There is blood on them, so I carefully fold them and leave them on the bathroom floor. Pulling my hair tie out, I drop it into the pile and crank on the shower, watching the spray hit the porcelain base until steam curls around the room. I step inside and tug the curtain closed. Leaning my head back, I let the water sluice over me before turning and pressing my hands to the wall. I watch the blood-red tinted water swirl around my feet before being washed away.

I hear him enter the bathroom, and I can’t bring myself to care, even when the shower curtain is pulled back. Usually, I would hide and gasp in horror, but I’m just so…drained. I stand here, not even looking at him, even as I feel his eyes roving over every inch of my body, heating my skin better than the shower.

“We need to talk,” I tell him.

“We do, but first, let me help you clean off and thank you.”

“Thank me?” I ask, lifting my head to see him watching me carefully.

“For saving one of my own when you didn’t have to. You showed us all today just what humans are capable of. Yes, Talia, I plan to thank you for being so fucking amazing and not taking it out on my people. For saving him.”

He holds my gaze as he steps into the shower with me. I turn, my eyes widening as I crane my neck to stare up at him. Grinning, he leans in and kisses me softly. My eyes slide closed as I lose myself in the soft, sweet kiss, but as quickly as it started, it ends, and I’m left blinking my eyes in shock when he drops to his knees before me.

“Cato,” I whisper.

“Shh, Tally, just shh. Let me thank you, my little human,” he murmurs, his voice rough as he stares at my body, licking his fangs. “You are so beautiful, it hurts. If only you knew what you did to me, how wild you make me, and how out of control you make me feel when I strive for constant order. You make me feel alive, Tally, just as much as you make me feel this voracious hunger.”

What can a woman say to that? Not much, since Cato parts my thighs softly and gazes at my pussy so long that I start to get self-conscious. I try to close my thighs, but he keeps me spread wide for him, licking his lips as his bright red eyes clash with mine again.

“I wonder if you taste as delicious as you smell,” he purrs.
