Page 62 of Monstrous Truths

She giggles, her cheeks blushing. “Is that right?”

“Yes. I will romance you with science and then date you.” I grin down at her, and her smile fades as her gaze becomes distant. “Tally?”

“What? It’s nothing.”

“No, tell me,” I demand, frowning. I hate the worry I see in her eyes, and I want to share it with her so she never has to worry again.

“I’m just worried about what they will do now.” She pats my chest and tries to turn away, so I grab her hand and haul her back until she slams into my chest.

Leaning down, I kiss up her throat to her tiny ear. “We deal with this together, always together. They won’t get their hands on it. Now let me send my people back, they need to rest. You and I can stay and work through everything else until you feel more confident, and then we can go through every single one of your worries one by one until you feel better.” I nip her ear, loving when she melts into me. “Sound good, Tally?”

“Good.” She leans back into me. “You tricky little monster.”

“There’s nothing little about me, Tally. I’ll show you that later too,” I promise before releasing her.

She shoots me a glare, but there’s a smile tugging at her lips, and I feel like I could take on all the humans just to see that smile again.

THIRTY-FOUR

TALIA

Just like Cato promised, he dismissed everyone and then we got back to work, trying to sort through the rest of the research. As we do, he works through my worries with me one by one.

“What if they come?”

“They would have to get over the wall and through our people first. They will never get to you or the research,” he promises as he labels some samples.

“What if the research isn’t the only—”

“It has to be, or they wouldn’t need it so desperately.” He winks. I huff, and five minutes later, I fire more at him. He shoots them all down logically, and it shouldn’t, but it reassures me. Now, I feel confident once more, as well as safe and sure.

Just like he knew I would.

Despite the fact I cannot allow myself to love Cato, he makes it so hard not to. He’s always there for me, he holds me when I get weak, and he makes me laugh and values my intelligence. He challenges me and pushes me, all while holding my hand.

Cato is far too easy to love.

I know when this thing between us is over and he leaves for his mate, it will destroy me, because no matter how hard I try to protect my heart and soul, they already belong to him. He stole them with every soft touch, with every teasing kiss and innocent look. He made me his, and he doesn’t even know it.

“What? No more?” He grins cheekily at me. His tail slides up my leg in that maddening way, as if he can’t bear not to touch me, and I find myself leaning into his side. His grin slowly fades as he looks down at me, his throat bobbing as he swallows.

“Tally,” he whispers, reaching down to cup my face and raise it farther as he searches my eyes. “I—”

He freezes, and I blink, ready to leap for him. I want to tell him how I feel so maybe he can love me back. “Cat—”

“Run!” he roars, starting to turn when I hear something flying through the air. I scream as he jerks and falls. Horror courses through me as I reach for him, blood spilling from a wound on his side. My head jerks around as humans pour into the lab dressed in all black, their guns turned to us. Behind them is an open hatch in the floor I didn’t even know was there.

“Don’t move!” they yell, but Cato roars.

His eyes are completely red as he climbs to his feet and steps before me, his arms spread wide and claws on display. “Kill him and take the girl!” That makes Cato roar even louder, and then he leaps at them.

Looking around for a weapon, I grab a microscope and slam it into the nearest guard when he reaches for me. More hands are there, however, and then I freeze when three more shots are fired. My head swivels around in horror, and a scream lodges in my throat as Cato stumbles back. Another guard steps forward and fires right into his chest, and Cato drops to his knees. His hands come up and cover his chest before he falls to his back. I sag in the man’s arms as I stare at Cato and the hole in his chest.

“No!” The scream erupts from me so loudly, the man holding me lets go. “Cato!” He doesn’t move.

Bodies of the men he killed are scattered around, but it’s not enough, they converge on me. I refuse to leave him here, refuse to let him die. I kick and fight to get to his side, barely seeing the men attacking me. They don’t want to hurt me, though, which is an advantage. I slide under someone’s arm, grabbing a gun and slamming it into his head before dropping to Cato’s side and pressing my hands to the wound in his chest. His blood covers my hands and arms.

“Don’t you dare fucking die,” I snarl. “You promised you would always be there.”
