Page 71 of Monstrous Truths

I moan, and he swallows the sound, kissing me breathless, and I give as good as I get. I lick and nip his lips, sucking the sting away as he snarls and flips us again so I’m pinned beneath him. He wedges his body between my thighs as he sucks on my tongue.

Just as suddenly as it starts, it stops when an electric shock flows through him and into me. I scream, and he throws himself away, writhing on the floor and clawing at his neck, where I hadn’t even noticed a slim silver collar. “Cato!” I yell, pressing my hand to my lips, where the shock still sits.

I get to my feet and rush to the door, pounding on it until my hands cut open. “Stop it, stop it!” I scream. “Please stop!” I turn back, covering my lips as he roars as more shocks go through his body. Just then, the door opens, and I almost fall through it, only to stop when a gun is pressed to my head.

Cato snarls and narrows his eyes on us, even as he claws at the collar.

“Time’s up.” The gun remains against my head as I’m dragged away. “If you move, she dies.” When the door slams shut, I sag, aching to rush back to Cato’s side. The guard slams me against the wall and meets my eyes. “Now do you see? If you don’t work, we’ll kill your little pet.”

“I’ll work,” I say instantly. I would do anything to protect him.

He’s here.

Cato came for me.

They have Cato, and I refuse to let them hurt him, so I’ll play nice for now.

I work for a few hours, and after, they let me change into the clothes they give me, finally getting me out of those fucking scrubs.

Honestly, though, I’m not their little lackey. They watch me with bored eyes and eventually wander off, so I start to create a plan. I don’t know how it will all come together yet, but I need to get Cato and the research out of here. I sit to hide it under the desk, where there’s a box for rubbish, and start to add bits and bobs as I go so they don’t get suspicious.

I’m just straightening from adding some samples when the door opens behind me, making me stiffen. “Get up, Doctor, there’s someone we need you to see.”

With that, I’m forced to my feet at gunpoint and dragged down more corridors before being shown to a door.

“Wait here,” the guard orders.

“For?” I question, but he just ignores me. “Obviously deaf as well as dumb,” I mutter.

He turns to me, a scowl twisting his lips as he steps closer, towering over me. “What did you say?”

“You’re going to have to try better than that to scare me,” I reply sweetly, patting my hand on his chest and pushing him back. “I’ve been surrounded by nearly eight-foot monsters for far too long for a weak, steroid using bitch like you to intimidate me.” I flutter my lashes.

His hand comes up, and he’s about to slap me when his radio buzzes. “Let her into the room.”

“You’re a lucky bitch. Next time, you won’t be,” he hisses, grabbing my arm roughly, opening the door, and flinging me inside.

Turning, I smash my fist into it. “Bastard,” I mutter, but then I freeze when I turn around. Chained across a table is Aria. I hurry to her side, dropping to my knees as I flutter my hand over her head.

“Aria?” I whisper “Aria?” I repeat louder, but she doesn’t stir.

Running my hand under her sweaty hair, I find her pulse and breathe a sigh of relief that she’s alive. She’s clearly knocked out but alive. There’s no water that I can use to wash her head and search for an injury, so I sit back on my heels, gnawing on my lip before looking around. They brought me here for a reason… Was it to use her against me?

Maybe.

Sighing, I get to my feet and wander around the table, keeping my eyes on her the entire time. “Hurting her won’t get you anything, I barely know her. She’s just someone you employed, and she’s as dumb as a box of rocks if you ask me,” I call, hoping they will let her go or at least won’t hurt her. “I would just get rid of her now and save you a whole heap of trouble. Trust me, that’s all she’s good for—trouble.” The words spewing from my lips make me feel sick, and I pray if she’s listening, she knows I don’t mean them.

The door opens again, admitting Doctor Hayes. “Now that’s not nice, Talia. She came all this way to save you from us.” He cocks his head as he looks her over. “I’ll admit she is…lacking intelligence, but she is brave.” He shuts the door behind him and leans against it as he looks me over.

“Sit.”

“I’m not a dog,” I snap.

“No, if you were, you’d be better behaved. Now sit,” he demands, “before I decide I don’t need her after all and slice that pretty little throat.”

Eyes narrowed, I sit stiffly in the chair, my hands folded on the table. I glance between her and him, wondering what his plan is. She came for me with Cato…and Akuji. Oh god, he wouldn’t have let her go alone. I want to ask, but I dare not. It would give away my hand, and that’s what he wants. He’s searching for any weaknesses, and I’ve already shown Cato is one, and because of that, he will be hurt.
