Adam quickly followed, calling out as his body froze before he shuddered with his own release. He pulled her snugly into his arms as their breathing slowed. He kissed her forehead gently, again and again.

Was this real? Was it all a dream? She gave in to the warmth of Adam’s body and the tender caress of his unforgettable kisses. For the first time in a long time, everything was not only right—it was real.

“That was incredible,” Adam said. “Everything I’ve waited for.”

“Spectacular,” she replied, kissing him and running her fingers through his very messy hair.

“I have to say one thing, just so we’re clear.”

Melanie’s heart jumped. What was he going to say? “Yes?”

“You’re not going anywhere. I don’t want you to leave after what we just shared. I need you to stay the night.”

Contentment took hold again—he wanted her to stay. But just as quickly she realized the ramifications. “Are you sure that’s a good idea? There could be photographers outside your building. That’d be bad if I’m seen leaving in the morning.”

“Then we scope it out. I’m not letting you out of my sights. Tonight, you stay here. With me. The whole night. Deal?”

What was the old saying about going for broke? She’d already done the thing she’d sworn she would never do and it had been so worth it. If something went wrong, she and Adam would deal with it, together. For now, they had each other, and they had the whole night. “Of course I’ll stay. The whole night.”

Fifteen

Melanie awoke feeling as if she was floating inside a daydream. Did last night really happen? The morning sun beamed through Adam’s bedroom windows. She clutched the sheets to her chest. Adam’s sheets. Adam’s bed.

The distinctive sound of paws on the hardwood floor filtered into the room and Jack appeared. As soon as he spotted her, he rounded to her side of the bed.

“Good morning, buddy.” She rolled to her side, facing Jack.

He lowered his head, begging for scratches behind the ear, which she was all too happy to provide.

“Don’t you two make an amazing pair,” Adam said from behind her.

Melanie looked over her shoulder, drawn to the sleepy warmth of his voice. He knocked the breath right out of her, wearing gray pajama pants loose around his hips, no shirt, holding two coffee cups.

“Good morning.” It was impossible to fight her grin—he was too damn sexy.

He set his knee on the bed and leaned down to kiss her forehead. “Morning, beautiful.” He handed her a mug. “Cream and one sugar, right?”

She nodded, incredulous. “You remembered.” Of the millions of things Adam had crammed in that gorgeous head of his, how he’d managed to remember the way she took her coffee was beyond her.

She blew gently on the coffee and took a small sip, feeling, well, conflicted. Last night had been absolutely glorious, and it had felt so good to finally surrender to him, but there was no question it had been born of a moment of weakness. She’d been so caught up in the moment, so swept away by Adam and weeks of telling herself she couldn’t have him.

And she still didn’t have him, even if she was fairly certain now that the illusion of Adam and Julia was exactly that, an illusion. He wouldn’t have slept with her if Julia was a genuine love interest. The Adam she knew would never do that. The Adam of urban legend might, but that wasn’t the real him.

What was first and foremost on her list of concerns was the contract with his father. She’d made a pact with herself to honor the agreement, and she’d broken it. She hated making excuses. She hated the notion of giving herself a free pass or letting anything slide, and yet that was the only way around what she’d done.

“I wish we could spend the morning in bed.” Adam placed his coffee cup on the bedside table and crawled under the covers with her. “But I have a ton of meetings, starting at nine. If it was only one or two, I’d move them.”

“Meetings.” Melanie’s heart thundered in her chest. “Oh my God. What time is it?”

“A little after seven. Don’t tell me you’re late for something this early.”

“I have a nine-o’clock, too. But I have to get all the way down to my apartment, shower, change, then get to the office and make coffee. I’ll never make it if I don’t leave right now.” She threw back the covers, quickly realizing she had nothing to cover herself with. She grabbed a pillow and shielded her body, scanning the floor for her bra and panties.
