‘No seriously, what the fuck does that mean?’ Candace pauses for a moment, then smiling she says, ‘Is that why you got kicked out of your last flat?’

We both laugh.

‘It just means you don’t cause trouble in a place or situation you’re going to repeatedly find yourself. In other words, maybe I shouldn’t be getting my kit off for everyone to see so close to my place of work...’

Candace looks at me. ‘Leyna, fuck ‘em. If you enjoy it, you need to do it.’

‘I do enjoy it... which is why I’m going to continue to do it privately.’

Candace nearly chokes on her drink. ‘What?’ When I just shrug Candace retorts, ‘Leyna if you’re going to drop a bomb like that you can’t leave me hanging here!’

‘It’s nothing sordid or anything. It’s just...’ I’m trying to think of the right way of phrasing this because it does sound really fucking sordid. ‘It’s just that I had an offer. After I cancelled. Someone came up to me and asked if I would sit for him. Privately. At his house.’ With each fragment I can see Candace’s eyes bulging even further out of her head.

‘So, some randy rando from the classaccostedyou afterwards and now you’re going to sit naked for him in his house.’

‘It’s not like that!’

‘How is it not like that.’ It wasn’t a question.

‘Because he’s not arando,’ I emphasise the word. ‘I know him. From work. He’s one of the professors in the department.’

‘Don’t you dare tell me it’s that English bloke who walks around your department like he’s just stepped out ofEnglish Country Cottages - for people who went to private school and have so much money they don’t know what to do with it.’

I look down into my cider, swirling it around, looking incredibly sheepish.

‘No...’ Candace lets the last vowel sound hang in the air. ‘I was just kidding Leyna. I didn’t actually... So, it’s eccentric Professor hottie?’

‘Candace!’

‘How do you do this? Every time I see you it’s like,’ and Candace starts to make bomb explosion noises while throwing her hands all over the place.

‘Yeah, that’s my life.’

‘You are living the dream, Leyna. When do you start?’

‘Usual time, next week. At his house. It’s on Albert Street. I’ll leave you the address. You know, in case you need to come looking for me.’

Candace whistles. ‘Some nice houses there. Are you nervous?’

I shrug my shoulders. ‘No more than normal.’ That was a lie.

‘You can always back out of it, remember. And don’t let him pressure you into any weirdo stuff. Unless, of course, you want to do the weirdo stuff.’

‘I’ll be fine, thanks. He’s a gentleman, remember?’

‘Hurrumph. Gentleman, my arse,’ Candace scoffs and downs the last of her cider. ‘Right, after that bombshell, we need more drinks,’ she says as she heads to the bar.
