‘À bientôt! See you soon!’ she waves to us as she leaves.

‘That was like a warm summer’s breeze and a spinning tornado all in one,’ I say once the door is closed. ‘She’s wonderful!’

‘Yes, Huguette is one of a kind. She and Bernard run the B&B down the road. They’ve been there forever, or, at least, since I was a child. And her guests love it and love her.’

‘I can see why. Do you have a vase around here?’ I’d been looking through cupboards in the kitchen to no avail.

‘Here,’ Jack pulls one out of a cupboard.

‘I never would have found that,’ I laugh as I set about putting the flowers in the vase.

‘We should probably get going soon,’ Jack says.

Another fancy dinner, this time at Jack’s other restaurant in Ambleside—I couldn’t wait.

Chapter 31

Jack

Adense, misty hazecovers the whole town and you can’t even see the huge snow-capped mountains that normally surround Ambleside—it’s that thick. It’s a strange feeling knowing there’s an enormous mountain hidden behind all that mist that you simply cannot see.

‘We’re a bit early, don’t you think?’ Leyna says, eyeing the digital clock in the car as we weave in and around the narrow streets.

‘You said you liked sleuthing.’

‘I did.’

‘Well, we are early for that very reason,’ I explain.

‘I thought perhaps you were just slipping into your geriatric ways and wanted to go for dinner at four o’clock.’

‘Ha-ha, very funny. Not quite yet. Here’s what I’m thinking. We’re going to park so that we see the front of the restaurant and we’re going to watch for a bit. Might take a drive around back and see what’s happening there, too.’

‘Goodness, Jack! This is proper stakeout stuff. I had no idea we would be going this deep undercover! If that was the case I would’ve brought my binoculars and police scanner!’ She flashes me a cheeky, little smile.

‘Very funny. We probably won’t see anything, but I want to just watch for a bit before we go in.’
