As they reached the horses, Lionel asked, “How long do ye ken before we return to our business?”

As if he were the one inheriting an earldom and dozens of new duties and responsibilities.

How long would Thaddeus let Lady Perdie tempt him away from his duties? Unfortunately, he didn’t have an answer. Nor did he know whether he should continue to impose his protection when she vehemently opposed it.

“As long as I need to,” he said as he tightened his stallion’s girth and mounted. Thunder, his horse, was reluctant to leave behind the rich, verdant grasses near the brook, but Thaddeus held him with a firm hand and pointed his nose toward the road.

Perhaps the ladies would meet someone at the inn, and he could turn around, assured they would be well. Thus appeased, he dug his heels into Thunder’s flanks.

Lionel groaned as he hurried to mount up and follow. With a palpable effort, he gave a short, “Yes, Yer Lordship.”

At least Thaddeus would have no further resistance on that front. If only the ladies would give him as little trouble, but he knew it was too optimistic for him to hope for that.
