He stepped toward her. “I want to know what I did to anger you. And don’t use my mother as an excuse. As you said, let’s keep our families out of this. If this is between you and me, let’s keep it so. Are you acting out because I didn’t pay enough attention to you?”

Unexpectedly, he whirled around and closed the door, locking them inside.

Perdie let her fist fly. Pain rushed up her arm at the same time he yelped. Pushing past him, she opened the door and faltered.

There were three ladies and two gentlemen poised to enter. And suddenly she knew he had arranged this. They were meant to have opened the closed door and see only God knows what.

“Goodness me. Is that Lord Owen? And…why yes, it is Lady Perdita. Alone in a closed room!”

Perdie shut her eyes. The lady in the doorway twittered, her voice echoed by a friend whose laughter had teeth.

“It looks as though their engagement isn’t as broken as rumor would have us believe.”

Lord Owen, the cad, didn’t move; however, he turned his face enough for her to catch his smirk.

In a low voice that didn’t carry, Lord Owen whispered, “I think you’ll marry me now, Perdie.”

Never. But the word didn’t escape her lips. Fear choked her, the fear that maybe she wouldn’t have a choice but to marry after all.
