“Have you embedded a spy in our midst to report back to you our activities?”

“How diabolical and nonsensical. I almost wish I had thought of it.”

“Then how—”

“You told me. That night we broke into Sallis’s townhouse.”

Oh!Of all the things he could have said, she hadn’t anticipated that response. Charity sent her mind back to that night which had already been thoroughly imprinted in her thoughts. Closing her eyes, she saw the lady splayed indecently atop the desk, the viscount on his knees and his head under the voluminous fold of her gown. Then she felt the earl at her back, the heat and sheer presence of him and how her heart had raced…how her skin had prickled with sensations never before experienced.

Sensation that raced across her skin now.

I have seen the pictures in books, but I never imagined the act would be so…

Charity started to laugh, dispelling the tension that had been coiling low in her belly. “If you are so curious, I will borrow the book for you.”

“Is it scandalous?”

“I was tempted to faint.”

“Say it isn’t so,” he said drily. “Why were you ladies looking at such a book?”

“We wanted to help a friend seduce her husband. I shan’t say which friend it is.”

“Did it work?”

“I believe it played a part. They are terribly happy now when a few weeks ago, my friend was rather miserable in her marriage.”

“And this friend is another member of your lady’s club.”

“48 Berkeley Square is a wonderful, safe place where we ladies of the ton can be ourselves without fear of reproach. We do not have to be perfect or always proper, and I cannot tell you how wonderful that is. Theo urges us to leave all the cares of society’s expectations behind once we enter the townhouse. The experience has been marvelous.”

“How long have you been a member?”

“A little over two years. I help Theo with the expense books and also vet new members.”

“Jenna is very happy with your friendship,” he said with wry fondness.

The soft drizzle of rain started to fall, and she sighed. “I think our adventure is about to end.”

“Considering I do not want you to catch your death, I must return you inside.”

Yet neither of them moved. She wanted to kiss him. Their eyes met, and she narrowed her gaze at the way he stared up at her. There was a smile about his mouth and a wicked glint in his blue eyes.

“What are you thinking?” she asked.

“I am wondering what are you waiting on to get up.”

“You are insufferable,” she gasped, and before she could change her mind, Charity bent her elbow and pressed her mouth to his. There. She had acted on her desire, and she would not regret it.

The sound that came from him was a dark rumble of satisfaction. His mouth opened below hers, and she tentatively tasted him. He inhaled her gasp of alarm when he twisted, so she was halfway beneath him, holding her so firmly against his body.

She burned with the indecent pleasure of his tongue sliding against her lips, that little nip against her bottom lip, truly a command to open her mouth and let him in. Charity surrendered to his persuasions. He possessed her, laying claim with an erotic thrust of his tongue. Her arms tightened around his neck as he ravished her mouth with arousing thoroughness.

It was the icy sting of the rain that pulled them apart. Their harsh breathing mingled in the air, and Charity stared at him, barely able to discern his expression in the darkness of the night.

She shivered violently.

“You are cold.”
