She flinched, and he raked his fingers through his hair. Damn it, he was making a mess of it. There was a touch of pain in her eyes he did not understand. She was a woman of the world. Surely she understood that after he had compromised her last night he would have made an offer today. “Charity—”

“You only wish to marry me because of honor.”

“I took your virtue,” he said tightly.

“So if we had not…last night, you would not be offering now?”

“Is there a better reason to get married?”

She looked at him with eyes that glistened “Liking each other is a requisite for me, my lord.”

He disliked the stiff hurt in her tone. This was not the woman who had chased the storm with him last night, who had stood soaked in her blue gown and laughed with her head tipped to the heavens, or who had incinerated him with a simple kiss.

“I believe we established last night how much we liked each other.”

A faint blush crept up her ivory throat and onto her pale cheeks.

“Tell me honestly why you will not marry me, considering everything that happened in my bed last night.”
