“My sister’s happiness is important to me,” he said with perfect gravity.

Charity fell silent, listening as the viscount plied the lady he had brought home with flowery compliments. The earl remained silent, tenseness in his frame. Charity could feel him behind her, not touching, but she could practically feel the heat emanating from his body, a slight puff of air on the side of her neck. The muscles in her belly tightened.

What was that fleeting sensation? Could it be pleasure? The feel of the man behind her sent her senses spinning in a way she had never felt before. The idea was both exhilarating and bothersome.
