She looked away, chewing on her lower lip. “Fine.”

“Why did you leave your detail?”

While she laughed, the heat sliding along her face told me she’d been keeping secrets from almost everyone. “I don’t know. Because I felt suffocated. Because they’re boring. Because I can’t have any fun.”

“So let me get this right. You’re a highly intelligent woman who’s been educated about the dangers surrounding your father as well as your entire family because of who he is, yet you shove aside the men hired to keep you safe in order to go out with friends? Am I missing anything?”

“I deserve to have a life.”

I shook my head. “Unbelievable.”

“And what are you?” she asked, snapping her head in my direction. “You already told me you were going to defile me, taking what you wanted. Is there any difference?”

Goddamn it. The woman knew how to hit below the belt and I deserved it.

She toyed with her glass, sliding the tip of her finger around the rim several times before gulping the entire amount. Then she stood, sashaying closer, lifting the bottle from the counter, refilling her glass as well as mine.

The explosive heat between us was almost more than I could handle. “I was out of line,” I managed, although I’d meant what I said. I hadn’t accepted the job paying me a million bucks a mission as a good man. I was considered brutal, merciless, and I’d been called a savage more than once. I was also used to getting what I wanted.

Then this. And her.

Forbidden. Damn it, I wanted her. As she dragged her tongue across her lips, I forced myself to look away.Remember your oath to Eagle Force.

Yeah, as if that mattered at the end of the damn day.

“Don’t worry, Cobra. Unlike you, I don’t bite.” She backed away, leaving my cock aching.

I glanced at my watch more as a distraction than anything. “We’re not friends, Isabella. While I will protect you with my life, this isn’t personal. You need to get that through your head.”

“A little like the pot calling the kettle black, isn’t it?”

Exhaling, I checked my watch again.

Isabella twirled her glass back and forth. “And I don’t even know your name. Fine. Let’s get this call over with.”

“We will but first, you wanted answers and you’re going to get them. You need to be fully abreast of the kind of people who are after you and what they can and will do. Come with me and do not touch anything.”

She lifted her head, searching for some kind of truth in my eyes. Or maybe reassurance. Brutal truth I could supply but I wasn’t the kind of guy to give any form of comfort.

“Fine.”

I led her to the underground facility once again, only this time to the communications room. By the point she was safe and returned to her normal life, the location would be moved to another destination. However, she did have a certain amount of clearance that enabled me to bring her into the operations center.

“Impressive,” she said, although I was certain she’d seen near replicas over the years.

“Functional. Sit there.” I pointed to one of the chairs, moving to the computer system, shielding her view as I typed in my password. Then I navigated to the footage that Broderick had left in my folder. It would be erased as soon as we left the facility in the early hours of the morning. “It would appear that your discovery regarding nuclear fission caught the eye of several countries, including Russia. The counterterrorism division caught wind of suspicious activity within the United States. Their investigation led to reliable sources providing a clear indication of your imminent abduction.”

“The Russians? Are you kidding me? The technology was top secret, only a few highly credentialed people notified of my findings. I’m still in my final stages of formulating, only limited testing done.”

I turned my head, studying her as intently as before. The girl was the real deal.

“It’s obvious you don’t know anything about the process or what I’m talking about,” she stated, her tone full of disdain. “In other words, the atoms are still vulnerable. If they were to get into the wrong hands, then boom. As in big boom and there would be nothing anyone could do about it and no way to stop the reaction. I was trying to neutralize that possibility. At this point, there’s no chance in hell that anyone could handle the technology. The facility I work in is as secretive as I would guess this one is. It’s so thoroughly secured that it would take an act of God to get into it.”

“I do understand, Ms. Adams. I’m considered a weapons expert. What I’m curious about is why the United States would sanction additional testing on a compound that could destroy the world.” I hesitated on starting the video, but her naivety of what was really going on provided a better understanding of her protected way of life.

She laughed, raking her long fingers through her hair. The subtle movement drew my eye, my cock twitching for the fifth time. Fuck. I had to get over this. “I’m not working eighty-hour weeks to provide yet another nuclear weapon, Cobra. I’m proud to be in the discovery phase with a dozen other brilliant scientists, providing technology to the medical field that could all but eradicate certain diseases like cancer, Alzheimer’s, fetal problems, and at least a dozen other maladies. In other words, the detection would begin years before any signs were manifested, allowing doctors and other professionals to stop the onslaught of a life-threatening illness before it began.”

I was stunned and impressed with her statement, but it didn’t change the underlying fact that she was in grave danger. “You don’t understand what I’m telling you. The Russians aren’t after the compound in whatever form you’ve formulated up to this point. They are after the person responsible for creating it. And I assure you, Ms. Adams, that they will not be gleaning information from your pretty little head for medical purposes. Once you’re captured, they will do whatever is necessary to force you to provide them with your knowledge.”
