“I’m glad. Just hang on. Remember my promise.” A promise made that I was beginning to doubt could ever be fulfilled.

As the time ticked by, I did nothing but scan faces, checking body movements, searching for anyone who paid too much attention. It came only five minutes before I had planned to walk us through the skyway to the other building.

“Come on. I’m going to wrap my arm around you. Just talk to me in French. I don’t care what you say. Don’t stop.”

“You’re scaring me.”

“I know.” I pulled her away, grinning like some fucking kid as she followed my orders, alternately laughing before saying sweet nothings, which is what a lover would do. I took my time heading toward the skyway, controlling every quick look, pulling her close more than once. There were four of them, all dressed in black jeans and different shirts. While there was no sign of a weapon, I made a guess they had ankle holsters.

Fortunately, they paid no attention. When we got to the gate, the plane was already boarding. This was getting far too out of hand. I grabbed her hand, winking as we moved to the line. While I tried not to make it obvious that I was checking, I managed to get a good look at one of the assailants. There was no doubt he was using recognition software by the way he was checking his phone. Goddamn it.

“Keep your head down,” I advised, half whispering. There were still ten people in line. Ten people too many. “And don’t look behind you.” I slid my arm over her shoulders, dragging her as tightly against my body as possible. I didn’t like being this out in the open or vulnerable. I’d never allow it to happen again.

I noticed the second asshole moving toward the window behind the check-in podium, scanning the crowd. Fuck. Fuck! I scooted a few inches in front of her, both our tickets in my hand. When the asshole started walking in our direction, I knew our cover had been blown.

“Hold on, sir. Just let me check,” the attendant stated, giving me a harsh look when I tried to move past.

“My wife isn’t feeling well.”

The woman glanced at Isabella and to my companion’s credit, she gripped my arm, swaying slightly. It was just enough the attendant waved us through. Given the asshole hadn’t caused a commotion, it was possible we hadn’t been recognized, just noted. Either way, getting into Dulles would be harried.

And it could prove to be deadly.

CHAPTER10

Isabella

The rush of adrenaline was invigorating.

It was also terrifying, leaving my skin crawling and my mouth dry. My heart was beating so rapidly even after being on the plane for thirty minutes that I could barely breathe. Just watching Cobra in action was incredible, his protective nature and ability to thwart danger unlike anything I’d ever seen with the Secret Service. He’d been trained well.

And the man was deadly.

“Have something to drink,” he advised.

My fingers were glued to the armrests, my knuckles white. Even though we’d already taken off, I was certain one of the men I’d noticed would walk through the plane at any time. “I’m not certain I can hold anything down.”

“You need to try and relax.” Cobra’s voice was just as husky, seductive, and demanding as it had been the night in the club, but there was even more of an edge to it. He was prepared for anything.

I was too frightened to think clearly.

Even though two attempts had been made at harming my family before, nothing had prepared me for the onslaught of emotions tearing through me, tiny pricks of electricity pulsing through my veins. How could anyone do this for a living?

I could tell he was handling me, ordering a glass of wine. Maybe he was right. I needed to learn how to control my reactions. The ordeal was far from over.

“When we arrive at Dulles, we’re going to need to leave the area quickly. Do you know the airport?”

“I’ve been guided through airports the majority of my life, Cobra. I didn’t have to remember anything about them.”

“Okay. Whatever you do, do not lose sight of me. If I need to break away, I’ll find you inside the nearest shop. However, if it’s longer than ten minutes, then you need to get to the area where the gate is located. Find a place to hide until just before boarding time. Do you understand me?”

I squeezed his hand. “Don’t lose me.” When I tipped my head, his eyes immediately softened.

“Stop worrying. I know what I’m doing.”

“But there’s more than one of them.”

He laughed, still holding my fingers in his. “I’ve taken on ten enemies at one time, coming out the only man standing. I wouldn’t worry too much. We have one solid advantage. There are too many people in the airport, far too much security for them to do anything crazy.”
