Cobra.

His lip was split, dark stains on his shirt, the wild look in his eyes a clear indication he’d been confronted.

I raced into the aisle, jumping into his arms. As he cupped my face, lifting my chin until we locked eyes, several people started to clap.

“You’re alive. You’re safe,” I sobbed.

“I told you, princess, that I’d keep you safe. I never break my promises.” As he captured my mouth, the stubble of his beard scraping against my skin, I melted into his arms. He pulled me onto my toes, crushing me against his chest, the kiss more potent than any before. As he swept his tongue inside my mouth, the electricity between us changed, more powerful than before, igniting a fire that would never be extinguished.

I was lost in him, frozen in the moment. I never wanted to leave his side again. While the cheering continued, he pushed me away, the connection strengthening, his smile one I’d never forget.

“I thought I’d lost you,” he whispered.

“Never. What happened?”

“Let’s just say there are four less Russians to track us.” His nostrils were flared, his hold possessive.

As he pulled me to our seats, a startling and precious moment entered my mind. I’d fallen hopelessly in love with him.

My savior.

My hero.

CHAPTER11

Jagger

“My man,” Jeremy said as he approached us, his casual appearance providing a moment of levity after the harrowing experience at Dulles airport. He threw out his hand and the moment I grasped it, he yanked me into a bear hug, slapping my back. “It’s good to see you again.”

“It’s good to be seen.” As I pulled away, I scanned the perimeter. While there’d been no sightings at the airport, I expected troops had already been sent. “We need to leave.” I glanced at the vehicle he’d brought, shaking my head. A fucking Jeep. Was he kidding? Had the man lost his mind?

He noticed my look of disdain, lifting a single eyebrow. “I have all the party favors you’ll ever need, and I ain’t talking about smack.” After winking at Isabella, he moved to the rear, pulling open the vinyl window and lifting a tarp in the back. The man had balls to be driving around with a fucking arsenal at his disposal.

“I got enough in here to start a war, although I admit, I hope that isn’t gonna happen. I kind of like my life the way it is right now. Aren’t you going to introduce me to your friend?”

Exhaling, I beckoned her closer. At some point I’d need to explain in more detail just how dangerous the situation had become. I’d made a risky, calculated move leaving her alone, but she was never far from my line of sight. I’d wanted to see how professional the men were who I’d noticed minutes after walking down the gateway.

They’d been well-trained assassins, and I knew there would be more.

While I’d been without traditional weapons, I’d managed to get all four of them alone, snapping their necks. I’d gotten lucky, tossing them in supply rooms out of sight. That wouldn’t happen a second time.

“Isabella, meet Jeremy. He’s trustworthy. Or so I think.” I offered a thin smile, but I couldn’t get over the apprehensive feeling.

“What a gorgeous lady. Your standards are getting better.” As soon as he issued the words, his smile faded. “I didn’t mean that, Cobra. Don’t take offense.”

“No offense taken.” He knew what I’d gone through. He’d nursed me through several bottles of whiskey as I carved my knife into the surface of a table instead of exacting revenge. The tension between us was awkward.

“You look a little worse for wear there, buddy. A rough time?” Jeremy grabbed our bags, tossing them on the back seat.

“Not as rough for me as for a few Russians.”

“I’ll be curious to hear the story. You still got it, my man. Let’s get out of here. I hear a bottle of whiskey calling our names. Grab anything you want but keep it out of sight.” He jumped into the driver’s seat, immediately starting the engine.

“Get in the back,” I told her.

“You’re still worried,” Isabella whispered as she crowded closer.

“Yes. We’re not out of the woods by a long shot.” I touched her arm, exhaustion starting to take a toll on both of us. She’d remained mostly silent during the long flight, barely eating anything offered to her. Her face appeared gaunt, her eyes listless. That kept my rage just below the surface. The motherfuckers would pay for tormenting her.
