And I didn’t like to feel like the animal being hunted.

As I headed into her bedroom, I moved toward the nightstand, yanking out the drawer. Anger and anxiety swept through me seeing that the drive had been ripped away from the tape. Hissing, I shoved the drawer back into position, storming through the house until I found her in the kitchen. I pulled her aside, trying to keep my voice low.

“Where’s the drive?” I heard the gruff tone and tensed, able to see the instant look of fear in her eyes from confronting her.

“I…”

I grabbed her other arm, yanking her close. “Please don’t tell me you did anything you might regret later.”

“What do you mean?”

“Isabella. Where is it? Remember, you told me about your previous intentions.”

She swallowed before reaching into the pocket of her jeans. “No, I didn’t access the computer system in order to work on the damn formula. However, I wanted to keep it with me.”

“Why? Did something happen?”

“No. It’s not that.” She glanced over my shoulder. “I just wanted it with me.”

“Put it back.”

“My turn to ask why.”

Sighing, I let her go, raking my hand through my hair. “If they find the drive on you, then they’ll have no reason to keep you alive. At least if the fuckers take you, then I will be able to find you.”

“What if you can’t?” she asked, her voice so damn small.

“Baby. I will burn down the world if that’s what it takes to get to you. Nothing will be left standing.”

CHAPTER16

Jagger

Two days later

Darkness had fallen an hour before and I remained in the shadows, holding my communications device in my hand. My feeling of uneasiness has grown significantly, my inability to sleep creating an entirely different fervor of unsavory ideas. Now the line to my handler appeared to be dead, the call never going through.

Every red flag in my arsenal had been raised, enough so I was ready to break protocol contacting Broderick. While that might not bode well for any additional missions, it could provide assistance if necessary. Not knowing was agonizing.

Several minutes later, I made the decision, contacting Broderick, uncertain what to expect. When he answered the secure call, I could immediately hear testiness in his tone.

“You’re breaching protocol, Cobra. Unacceptable,” Broderick barked.

“But necessary. My handler has vanished. Possible assistance needed.”

He sighed, grumbling under his breath. “What’s the situation?”

“Threat assessment continues to be high. My stateside location was discovered quickly.”

“Which means you consider there to be a breach in security?”

“Without a doubt,” I told him. While Jeremy had indicated he had business to attend to, I was at the point that keeping our possible movement private was necessary, if for no other reason than Jeremy’s safety. He’d continued to act cavalier, as if the situation was typical for him. Perhaps he was into something much bigger than I’d originally believed.

“Where is your location?”

I debated telling him, but at this point, it was necessary in order to secure possible assistance if necessary. “Lisbon. I’ll send the coordinates.”

He half laughed. “Are you certain your location hasn’t been detected?”
