“I couldn’t shoot him, no matter my orders. I allowed my colleagues to handle the situation. They’re damn good at what they do. I’m sorry to say your boyfriend won’t be coming to your aid.”

Tears rushed into my eyes, but I fought them. “You’ll never get away with this.”

He walked closer, keeping his weapon leveled at my head. “I assure you, princess, that I will. You have no idea the power my colleagues have. Now, I would hate to shoot a creature so beautiful, but I’ll do so if necessary.”

I flung myself at him without thinking, pummeling my fists against his chest. The weapon was jerked from my hand, tossed aside. “You asshole. You won’t get away with this. My father will hunt you down.”

“Your father is nothing but a puppet.” He shoved me aside with enough force I was pitched several feet away, slamming into the wall. Stunned, I watched as he ripped the drawer from the nightstand, grabbing the drive. “Such a clever place to hide something so important. Sadly, Cobra was predictable as I knew he would be. I banked on the man following his training to the T.”

“What the fuck are you doing? You’re an American soldier.”

“Not anymore. Not since they tossed me away.”

I scrambled to my feet, allowing the slight flash of color in the sky to highlight the fallen weapon. He anticipated my action, yanking it from the floor.

“You’re a bastard. You’re his friend.” I had to get the drive. Then I’d smash it into a thousand pieces.

“Friendships only go but so far. Your capture is going to provide me with a nice retirement.” When he started to shove the drive into his pocket, I flew at him, wrapping both hands around the one holding the drive. Then I sensed another presence, my mind spinning.

“If you touch her, you will die.” Cobra’s voice was like sweet music. As soon as he walked into the room, Jeremy tried to grab me by the throat.

My instincts took over and I smashed my fist against his chin, backing away.

Cobra fired a single shot then everything went into slow motion. Jeremy acted as if nothing had happened, staggering forward.

“Do you want to know how this happened?” Jeremy laughed, immediately coughing afterward. Even in the darkness, I could tell he was injured severely.

“Let me guess,” Cobra hissed. “There’s someone on the inside.”

“Several people, but you already guessed… that. You’ll never believe the one person that…” Unable to finish his sentence, Jeremy fell to his knees, gasping for air, the weapon slipping from his fingers.

Cobra kicked it away, placing the barrel of his weapon against Jeremy’s forehead. “Who?”

When Jeremy laughed, I sensed Cobra was losing control.

“For the honor of your country, tell. Me. Who.”

“Honor?” Jeremy wheezed. “Don’t you see? I never had any.”

“Fuck you,” Cobra hissed. “You lost all sense of loyalty to your country and to people who gave a damn. I’ll see you in hell.”

I closed my eyes, slapping my hand over my mouth as Cobra fired a single shot. All time stopped, the air suffocating. When Cobra gathered me into his arms, whispering that everything was going to be okay, I slowly started to shatter into a million pieces.

My hero had kept his promise, but what would this mean?

“Come on, princess. We need to get out of here. Just take my hand.”

“The drive? Please, we can’t leave it.”

He handed it to me before kissing my cheek, his whisper full of agony. “Keep it protected, princess. The world needs your discovery.”

I wrapped my arm around his neck, my mind unable to process everything that had just occurred. As soon as he led me from the room, footsteps pounded into the house, dozens of them. Then a bright light was splashed across us, making it impossible to see the people who’d trapped us.

“Sergeant Stone?” the male voice asked.

Relief flooded me. “It’s Dane.”

“Who’s asking?” Cobra snarled.
