Page 9 of Debt of Honor

I was disgusted that his dominance attracted me. But if he was really saved me, he was a hero. Swallowing hard, I lifted my chin, daring him to follow through with what he’d just promised. I loathed the fact I was tingling all over, my nipples already swollen from his rough handling of me.

“I can handle it. You might be surprised, tough guy.”

Laughing, his nostrils flared as he glanced down to my cleavage then to my thigh before sliding along the side of my neck to my eyes. My dress had ridden up, almost exposing my soaked panties.

Was it possible he sensed my arousal? Of course he had. But he was in the same condition as he’d been minutes before. I tried to hold my own, but as the yearning sparked buzzing vibrations deep in my core, I finally took a deep breath. The man was utterly gorgeous, muscular in all the right places. And damn it, my mind went to nefarious spots in my brain, lurid and filthy images dominating my synapses. I was crazy.

“Fuck you.”That’s great, girl. Just fuel his fire.

He dared to lower his head a few more centimeters until I almost forced the issue, planting my lips against his. As hot trickles of his breath skipped across my skin, I became lightheaded, envisioning the throes of passion. “Sit still and behave,” he muttered.

“Yes.Sir.”

My retort was met with a dark chuckle.

Now my mind scrambled to assess what little Cobra had told me. God. I’d barely glanced at his credentials. I was such an idiot.

While I was no fool with regards to safety precautions, my father insisting I go through drills with the Secret Service, the soldier hired to keep me protected was an asshole. Was it possible he was lying, taking me as his hostage in order to demand a hefty ransom from my family? Yes, but his method of operation, the men he’d hired to assist him were all military trained. It was obvious by their methods.

Also, if the man was planning on using me as a convenient way of obtaining a fortune, he would have been more careful as to the moment he’d taken me hostage. The operation smelled of danger, the threat against me shifting to a higher level of security. My father had warned me that my chosen profession would come with enemies lined up to either destroy my work or try to turn me against my own country.

Maybe I hadn’t taken the warning seriously enough. When my rescuer shoved me onto the passenger seat, my natural instinct was to reach for his eyes. That might happen later after he indulged me with more information.

If he did.

I huddled in the seat, fear inducing strong jolts of adrenaline. Even my legs were shaking as the burst of energy flowed through my bloodstream.

He jumped into the driver’s seat, not wasting a beat before screeching out of the dark and gloomy area, leaving the soldiers behind.

I shifted my attention to the side window, my rapid pulse making it difficult to breathe or swallow. I’d never known this kind of terror before. There was no exercise or pretend abduction that could have prepared me for the overwhelming emotions. Would I ever see my parents again? Would I ever see my friends?

The mystery man accelerated, checking the rearview mirror every few seconds. Even though he’d told me that I couldn’t jump out the door, I tried, only to realize he’d anticipated my rebellion and locked it.

“Tell me your name and rank,” I demanded, folding my arms across my chest. I’d been stupid enough to choose this night to go out with friends. I hadn’t been to a nightclub in over a year. I was a confirmed workaholic, refusing to date or live my life as normal twenty-some-year-olds did. Okay, I wasn’t considered normal by any standards, my freakish level of intelligence off-putting. I doubted the gorgeous man sitting next to me gave a damn. He was just a grunt following orders.

He turned his head toward me. While the darkness prevented me from seeing his eyes, I could tell he was trying to figure out why I was so damn important. He’d spewed off some statistics, but he’d been required to memorize enough to convince me he was a friend instead of a foe.

“Not necessary at this point.” His tone was gruff, but the huskiness wrapped around his vocal cords did the same thing it had done the moment he’d demanded that I come with him.

Enflame embers I hadn’t even known existed.

As crazy as it sounded, I wanted nothing more than to see him in bright light. I had a feeling I’d bask in his muscularity, his looks alone indulging my many fantasies.

What are you thinking?

I wasn’t certain any longer.

“What is necessary?”

“That you remain quiet.” He rustled through a small box located between us, yanking out a dark piece of material. “Put this on.”

As he flung it in my direction, I did what I could not to overreact. A blindfold. “Why? What are you afraid of me seeing?”

“My guess is you’ve already figured that out, princess.”

Princess? Was he making a slight at me? “A secret location. You need to let me call my father.” Maybe throwing my weight around would help. Would my father even care?

“Put on the mask or I’ll do it for you.”
