“Now, this is a party dress. We should go dancing.”

Cobra swept his arms around me, giving me a stern look. “That’s not going to happen. You’re expected to be at the celebration, and I was tasked to make certain you didn’t stray.”

“Party pooper.”

“Besides, your days of escaping your detail are long gone.”

“I thought you were my detail.”

“I am and you will never get away from me again. I assure you that I will hunt you down.”

Shuddering from the sexy thought, I gave him a saucy look, enough so he swatted me on the bottom twice. “Ouch! You’re not supposed to hit the daughter of the president of the United States. I’m certain that’s a punishable offense.”

“Speaking of punishment,” he said, allowing the words to linger. “Later, I’m going to turn you over my knee. Tonight we use the belt.”

His words would always send a wave of heat straight to my core. Goosebumps popped along every inch of skin, and I reveled in his musky scent, taking several deep breaths. “Promises. Promises.”

“What have I told you before? I always keep them. Tonight, I’m going to tie you to the bed, spending hours ravaging your body.”

“Mmm, but you’re not allowed to discipline me.” I backed away before he could smack me again, giggling like some kid.

He rubbed his jaw, the three-day stubble a reminder that he was a man who didn’t play by the rules. “As the head of your security detail, I have orders to keep you safe by any means necessary.”

“Uh-huh.” All I could do was laugh. This was the first party I wasn’t going to hate with a passion. I’d been proud to be in the room when my father had been announced the winner of the election, but it wouldn’t have meant nearly as much as the fact Jagger Stone stood by my side. He’d given me a second chance at remembering I had a family.

While it had been a difficult two days after providing the report, I’d finally moved into finding peace. I’d been able to talk to my parents about what had happened, all three of us crying over the horrific accident. While I still had a hard time understanding that they’d never believed me strong enough to learn the truth, I could tell how much pain they’d suffered in silence through the years.

Through reliving the tragedy, it had brought us closer. Somehow, I could feel Angela smiling down from heaven where she held a special place, a true guardian angel.

Just like Cobra.

“Are you ready?” he asked, giving me a sly look.

I moved closer once again, pressing my hands on his suit. “You’re not wearing a uniform.”

“Because I’m not active military.”

“But you kept your job.”

“What job?” he asked, his grin lopsided. At least he was less tense than a week before, although his ‘work’ had taken him away for long hours.

“Uh-huh. I’m certain you’re the star.”

“Oh, I don’t think so. The director is still trying to figure out how I’m allowed to ignore the rules. It would seem I’m having a torrid affair with a gorgeous woman.”

I adjusted his tie and gave him a heated look. “You know I’ll hunt her down.”

He laughed as he cupped my face. “I only have eyes for you, princess.”

“So when are you building that castle?”

“When you learn how to obey. Let’s go.”

He guided me out of the room and down the long hallway. The party was a small affair, the celebration for both my father and me. I’d hesitated at first, but we’d both achieved a success that had taken years in the making.

“You deserve this,” he whispered as we stood just outside the room.

“I don’t know about deserve, but I’m glad the formula is in very good hands.” I’d finished my work, altering the formula so no one could ever use it for nefarious purposes again, although I was certain someone would try in the future. Now the trials would begin, expected to last for well over a year. I’d remain as advisor, but I had no intentions of returning to what I’d thought was the only career for me.
