Such an angry little thing, she wouldn’t even say his name. “Yeah. He said Kent has been nervous lately. Something has him on edge, but he doesn’t know what. Might be worth looking into.”
She nodded. “Might be. And what about Marcus?”
“I have good news and bad news. What’ll it be first?”
She didn’t look amused. “Bad news. Hit me with it.”
“Ah, well, bad news first ruins the impact of the good news —”
“Justtell me, Zane.”
I sighed dramatically, but really, the more unpleasant she acted, the more I wanted to bend her over the counter and fuck the bitchiness out of her body. “Fine. The bad news is that dear brother Marcus is in White Pine.”
Her hand clenched around the beer can, causing the metal to crinkle under her fingers. “Fucking hell. That bastard threw him down in the mine?”
“Yeah. Shame about that, but he istechnicallyburied again,” I said. “He’s underground at least.”
If her eyes could have shot fireballs in my direction, they would have. “And what the hell is the good news then?”
“Oh, right. Well, the good news is that I found out where he is.” I grinned. “Told you, bad news first ruins the impact.”
“I fucking hate you.” It was surprising how fast that woman could move. She snatched a knife out of the block and raised it to throw at me — but I had her by the wrist before she could launch her projectile. She growled at me furiously, wriggling, pinned between me and the counter as I leaned over her.
“Don’t kill the messenger, little wolf,” I said softly. “I’m going to have to start keeping dangerous, pointy objects out of your reach.”
“Don’t you fucking dare,” she snapped. “It’s not like it would kill you anyway!” She strained against my hand, but all her strength had nothing on mine. “You’d probablylikeit. You’d just get all horny if I stabbed you again!”
“You’ve got me there,” I said. “Just like how you like it when I take control.” My grin widened, as did her eyes with blazing fury. Her arousal was undeniable. I could feel it when her hips moved subtly against me, the gap between us already non-existent. My hours of longing for her, only made worse by watching Leon with his eager little human toy, were about to bring me to an absolute explosion.
I wanted her. I wanted hernow.
Despite her fury, she wanted it too.
I leaned my head down, so my breath brushed along her neck. Goose bumps prickled across her skin, her inhale hitching slightly. “Tell me no, Juniper,” I said. “Go on. Tell me you don’t want it and I’ll stop, no hesitation. No games.”
She clenched her jaw, her breath still shuddering as my lips traced along her ear. Fuck, she smelled so good. Her skin was aromatic with sweat, soft and warm. I wanted to bite it. I wanted to taste her blood on my tongue and hear the fury in her voice melt into irresistible pleasure.
I kissed slowly down her neck, letting my breath touch her as much as my lips did. I paused at her collarbone, at the smooth curve of her shoulder, before I nipped my teeth along her flesh. She’d be covered in bruises in the morning, everywhere my teeth touched. Marked all over as mine.
“How cute. Vicious Juniper likes soft kisses.”
She tried to scoff; it came out as a gasp. “I...I’m not…”
“Not cute? Yes, you are. Cute, angry little thing.”
She snarled like she wanted to bite my head off, but every little bite made her shudder. The scent of her arousal grew stronger, and my mouth began to water. I wanted to slip my hand down her pants and feel how slick she was, but even more than that, I wanted her to beg for it.
I wanted her toneedit.
“I’m going to let go of your wrist,” I said. “So you’d better drop that knife.”
She smirked, watching me out of the corner of her eye. “Why? Scared you might get poked?”
I growled low in my throat, a warning as much as a promise. “If you try to stab me, I’m going to punish you.”
Her tension didn’t ease, and her smirk didn’t leave. The moment my hold on her wrist loosened, she did exactly what I’d warned her not to.
She tried to stab me, well aware of the consequences; perhaps evenbecauseof the consequences.
