With a disbelieving laugh, he started down their hundred-yard-easywalk to the huge entrance’s doors, cameras non-stop flashing, fans elatedly shouting as he smiled and waved. Kai grinned as he regarded all Breck’s ecstatic devotees.

They stopped to pose for pictures along the way. Even his parents paused for a couple of shots. If they’d been nervous about Breck’s reception, they didn’t appear so anymore. Those smiles on their faces said those concerns had been put to rest, their attention fully engaged in the celebration of their pride and joy.

“With the third pick in the 2022 NBA Draft…”

Breck held his breath as he sat with his family, their table one of many situated in front of Barclays Center’s enormous center stage.

“… the Washington Wizards select Breck Harland from George Mason University.”

The stadium erupted.

His heart lurched in his chest.

Then a hundred-watt grin spread across his face.

As he rose to his feet, so did Kai and his parents, as well as several teammates sitting at tables nearby. The cheers were deafening. More cameras assailed his eyes, as videographers rushed in to film him at ridiculously close range.

He turned to Kai, and God, he was beaming, those midnight eyes glittering with second-hand joy.

“Congratulations,” he murmured, giving Breck a hug.

But Breck wanted more and felt emboldened by all the incoming love. Grasping Kai’s head, he pulled him close for a brief but firm kiss.

More stadium-sized cheers.

He moved to his parents next.

“Congratulations, baby,” his mom cried, hugging him tight.

His dad embraced him next. “So proud of you, Son. You did it.” God, his voice sounded thick.

“Wedid it.” Breck pulled back and met his glistening eyes.

His dad swallowed, giving a nod, and clapped his shoulder.

Breck stepped out from his table and was instantly attacked by one and two of their Mighty Three. Just like his parents, Jegs and Charlie had been totally supportive of his relationship with Kai. Hell, as far as Jegs was concerned, Breck was dating a hotter version of Jackie Chan, and thus, he was already trying to be Kai’s new best friend.

“Congrats, G!” Charlie yanked him into his arms. “Now you’re the motherfuckin’ king ofDC!”

Breck barked a laugh.

And then Jegs had him in a bear hug, all hefting his six-foot-three-inch ass up off his feet. “That’s my guy! I fuckin’toldyou you’d be top three!” He dropped Breck down, then graced him with his own little celebratory dance.

Breck grinned and briefly joined him for a mini jig—which only had his fandom in the stands going even crazier.

God, this is so surreal.

He headed for the stairs at center stage and took them one at a time, then turned toward a pedestal waiting off to the right. A Washington Wizards ball cap sat waiting. He slid it on, turned back to the masses, and flashed another big-ass I-made-it smile.

The stadium roared louder.

He laughed and made his way to the announcer’s podium. The guy shook his hand and then both were turning for another photo op.

More cheers, as down below, his parents wiped their eyes.

Breck’s gaze slid to Kai.
