“Will,” Lily said. “Have a seat.”

“Please help me…” My plea came out in a defeated whisper as I dropped into the red leather club chair. I didn’t care if she thought me weak and pathetic. I was without Miranda.

“With what?” She cocked her head, lips pressed firmly together.

“Don’t play stupid with me. You know why I’m here…Help me.”

She sighed, clasping her hands together on her desk. “Don’t you think I wish this wasn’t happening? My best friend is gone. And it’s all because ofyou!” Her hands flattened onto the table as she sneered. “Did you have a good time in Vegas? See any good shows?”

“Dammit, Lily, please. I know how it looks, but I love her… I need her.”

“Perhaps you should have thought about that before you stuck your cock in another woman’s mouth.”

Her accusation cut me deep. I flew out of the chair and rubbed my hand over my face as I fought to stay in control. I recalled seeing my dad do the same thing a couple of hours ago. We were more alike than I realized.

“Is she okay?” I asked, utterly deflated.

“Yes.”

“How long will she be gone?”

Lily held my gaze and blinked several times.

“Well?”

“Indefinitely.”

I splayed my hands on her glass desk and leaned toward her. “Not. Possible. She has a life here and her business.”

“I have an appointment, so if there’s nothing else?”

“Lily, she’s coming back.” It wasn’t a question. She had to be coming back.

Lily stood from her chair and grabbed her handbag. Her red lips made the shape of a heart. I recalled Miranda saying it was a sign Lily was stressed or angry.

“Goddammit, Lily! She’s coming back! Right?” Any second I would hyperventilate and die a slow, agonizing death.

“No.” She left her office, leaving me even more devastated than before.

Miranda wasn’t coming back… ever? Not possible. Why would she give everything up because of me? There had to be more to it. An affair, as bad as it was, wouldn’t drive her away.

I stormed out of the office to my car and found Axel waiting for me.

“We need to talk,” he said.

“Get in.”

Axel directed me to a part of the city I never frequented so we could talk in private. I had a bad feeling about his unexpected visit. We’d only been working together for a short time, but I recognized the change in his stormy gray eyes. They were darker and focused and tense.

I pulled the car into a parking spot near a park, but I didn’t turn it off. Axel didn’t say anything, which frustrated me even more.

“What are you waiting for? Talk,” I snapped.

“Thirty-seven times I’ve tried calling you. Why didn’t you answer?” he all but growled.

“Because my fucking life fell apart. Miranda is gone.”

“I know.”
