“I fell for you.”

I groaned, rolling my eyes.Fuck.Here we go again.

“Stop it! Don’t mock me. Sometimes these things can’t be helped. You’re an attractive, charming—”

“No! Now you stop! I don’t want to hear it. I’m in love with Miranda. I don’t want you. I’m not attracted to you. I love Miranda.”

“Well, it doesn’t look like she feels the same way! And once you accept it, I’ll be here for you.”

“You bitch! Get the fuck out of my house!” I roared vehemently.

“Fine. But this isn’t over. Next week, we’re back to work. So be ready, Mr. St. James.” Cori stormed out of the front door and slammed it shut.

Relief overcame me. It made me sick how relentless Cori had become seemingly overnight. How she’d happily wipe Miranda out of my mind with her mouth, I imagined. Maybe she really was a slut and I’d been wrong about her like everything else.

I needed to occupy my mind before I went crazy worrying about Miranda. What was she doing right now? Was she lonely like me? Did she think about me as often as I thought about her?

I miss you, baby.

My phone rang on the coffee table. Axel’s name flashed on the screen.

“What?” I answered without preamble.

“You okay?”

I’d forgotten about the cameras he put in my house. Axel saw everything at my place, just like at SJI. “I’m fine.”

“You don’t sound fine.”

“How in the fuck am I supposed to sound?”

Axel sighed. “Miranda is safe. That should be all that matters right now until we get Jason and the rest of them.”

“Well, it’s not all that matters. I want Miranda back, and none of you assholes will tell me where she’s at. I can’t take not knowing. Has York given you any updates since he left?”

“No.”

“Are you lying to me like before?”

“No. York only checks in. He won’t tell me shit anymore.”

“I’m sorry about that. I know I brought you into this mess.”

“I chose not to tell York. Thought I could handle it on my own.”

I snorted. “You are a cocky bastard.”

Axel grunted.

He never was much of a talker. I appreciated it more than I thought I would during this shitty time in my life. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. I only wanted Miranda back.

“If you need anything, call,” he gritted out.

“Yeah. And if you hear anything.”

“I know. I’ll call you.” The line went dead.

I squeezed my head between my hands and rested it on the back of the sofa.
