He slowly twirled me, then collected me in his arms and swayed to the rhythm of the song. Dammit, I wanted to see him. See the room.

“I feel at a disadvantage. I want to see you.”

“Soon.” His hand skated down my bare back, down to my ass, where he cupped it ever so lightly. I was melting. I would be on the floor in a giant puddle any second.

Axel danced with me through the whole song, holding me close, his thigh rubbing between mine. My chest was smashed into his, our cheeks touching. I felt like I was floating on a puffy cloud.

When the song ended, he stepped out of my grasp. “Ready to see?”

“Yes.”

His hands were on my hips, then one dragged over my stomach as he moved me behind. I heard him inhale a deep breath. Was he nervous? Why?

“Okay, beautiful.” He untied the blindfold but didn’t uncover my eyes just yet. “I’m nervous as fuck. I’m only telling you because I want you to know I don’t do what I’ve always thought was cheesy romance stuff. I’ve never done anything like this, but I wanted to for you.” He exhaled a long breath.

Oh. My. God. He kept blowing my mind over and over.

“I appreciate your honesty.”

He exhaled and suddenly, I could see.

My hand went to my chest, and I think my jaw hit the ground. My living room had been transformed into a magical fairytale land. Or at least, it looked like one to me. Twinkling lights were everywhere. Colorful flowers were on every flat surface, and tissue paper flowers were hanging from the ceiling.

“You did all this?”

“No, Tessa did it.”

“For me?” I turned around to face him.

“All for you.” He lowered his lips to mine.

I kissed him for all I was worth, thanking him with my lips, pouring my heart into each swipe of my tongue. I was floored he would do something so incredible for me. My mind was blown.

“Let’s not get worked up. We have dinner and more dancing to do before we get naked.”

“Sounds good. I’m starving.”

Axel pulled my chair out for me, then took his own. Plates with silver lids were in front of us. As I sniffed the air, I couldn’t believe it. My eyes connected with his watching me.

His smoldering gaze dropped to the spot in front of me. “Go ahead. Check it out.”

I giggled, removing the lid. “Lily told you about my obsession with fried chicken.”

“Maybe. I’m down with it though. I love Popeyes back home. From where I grew up, I mean.”

“And here I was expecting something fancy and formal.”

“It is, baby. That’s what the china and silver are for.” He winked, lifting his beer bottle, and I raised my glass of what I guessed was Moscato. “To a night neither of us will ever forget.”

“Never.”

“Cheers, beautiful.” He clinked his bottle to my glass.

“Cheers.”

I couldn’t stop smiling throughout our meal. Axel had gotten all my favorite side dishes: mashed potatoes, gravy, macaroni salad, cornbread. It was carb overload. It was fantastic. He was fantastic.

Growing up, my mom had our chef prepare a lot of French and Asian cuisine. The food was always delicious, but I’d felt deprived of burgers, pizza, tacos, and fried chicken. The kids at school often talked about Taco Tuesday and Friday Night Pizza. I had envied them. My mother would have none of it though.
