“She will be. Why don’t you sit with her?”

“No! Don’t you leave me again.” Simone snaked her hands around my waist, holding on for dear life.

Claire arched her eyebrow. “Leave you again? What is she talking about?”

“Nothing,” I gritted out. “I need to see what’s going on, Simone. Your mother is here. Let go of me.” Okay, so my words came out harsher than I intended. But honestly, the way Claire eyed me, she was more than a little suspicious about Simone’s comment.

She tilted her face up toward mine. “You’re coming back?”

“When I can.” Damn, my chest ached to see the terror in her mocha-brown eyes.

“Fine. I’m trusting you to keep your word.”

I lifted her off my lap, set her beside me, and stood. Mrs. St. James took my spot and wrapped her arm around Simone.

“I’ll stay with her.”

I nodded and left to find Will and the others. I also adjusted my hardening cock. This was the worst time for a fucking boner.

All the guests were in the house as I weaved through them. Many looked confused and worried. Panicked whispers were on all sides of me. It made my skin itch as rage bloomed in my core.

“Got anything?”

York shook his head. “My men are canvassing the surrounding area with drones.”

“That photo couldn’t have been taken more than thirty minutes ago.”

“I know. Must’ve sent the file while making his escape.”

I scratched the back of my head, digging my nails into my scalp to keep me focused. Losing my shit now over Simone’s safety would give me away. But dammit, she was my woman. I may not have her in all the ways I wanted, but she was mine just the same. And I would kill anyone who fucked with her.

“York?” Mr. St. James approached. “Get the car, so I can get Claire and Simone back to the mansion.”

“What about Miranda?” I asked. Clearly, Will’s estate wasn’t safe.

“I don’t know. Talk to Will. He took her upstairs.”

No way in hell would Miranda stay here. I took the stairs two at a time, fisting my hands. York and I had made sure the home and property had the best security money could buy. But beyond the stone and iron fencing, it was public land, and we were limited to what we could do.

There needed to be more guards to walk the perimeter. I’d told Will and York as much when they bought this place. I wasn’t here to view it in person, but Will had sent me a map and photos of everything as I’d requested. He valued my opinion, he’d told me.

“Will?” I stalked down a long hallway.

“Yeah?”

I followed his voice and eyed double doors at the end. Another set was open. I peeked inside to find it was the nursery. Continuing down to what I assumed was the master suite, I stared out the wall of windows facing west toward the ocean. I didn’t like how they were opened to the bedrooms—the baby’s room.

“Will?” I knocked on the door.

“Come in.” He was sitting beside Miranda on the bed, rubbing her back. She was curled on her side.

“Is she okay?”

“Yeah. Just a little shaken up.”

He’d told me she occasionally had nightmares about Jason and being taken. It didn’t matter the fucker was dead. The trauma had already been done. If he wasn’t already six feet under, I’d kill him for hurting Miranda and Will as much as he had.

“Mr. St. James is taking your mom and Simone to the mansion. I think you both should go too.”
