“Are you kidding me right now?”

“The club won’t reopen for a couple of more weeks. You’ll have plenty of time to recover.”

“You bastard! First, you tear Sadie and me away from a life we love, then you want to kill my baby?”

Fury flashed in his eyes. “So you are pregnant.”

Crap! I didn’t mean to blurt it out that way.

He rounded the island. “I could strangle you.”

I believed he could. I ran to the other side, keeping distance between us. “It wasn’t planned.”

“Get rid of it.”

“No.” I kept moving, wholly terrified of what he might do to me. Richard hadn’t physically hurt me before, but now I didn’t doubt for a minute that he wouldn’t.

“Jaynee, I won’t have another man’s spawn under my roof.”

“Well, it’s not like I’m here voluntarily!”

He grabbed a knife out of the butcher block, appearing more deranged than ever before.

“Stop, Richard! What you’re doing is wrong. If you kill me, what will happen to Sadie?”

He stopped and looked past me.

Sadie’s blood-curdling scream raked down my spine. She reached for me to pick her up. In my arms, she sobbed, clinging to me. “Don’t kill, Mommy! Please don’t kill her.”

Oh, dear Lord, I broke as I held my baby girl to my chest. I cried with her, praying someone would help us… save us.

Richard threw the knife in the sink and stalked out of the kitchen. “This discussion isn’t over, Jay,” he shouted over his shoulder.

Sadie’s little arms practically choked me around the neck. “I want Zander. I want my daddy. Please, Mommy. I want my daddy.”

I shushed her. If Richard overheard her calling Zander, daddy, he would lose it.

“I know, baby. I know.” I bounced gently to calm her. “Everything is going to be okay.”

Way to lie to her, Jay.

What else was I supposed to do? I’d just had the living tar scared out of me.

Richard could’ve only been trying to strike fear in me with the knife. It worked. I’d watched enough true life crime documentaries to know anything was possible. That was why it was called a crime of passion.

Sadie might have just saved my life.

I spun around when I heard his footsteps.

“When you take her to school, stay with her. I don’t need the director calling and bitching about how all she does is cry.” He came toward us and grabbed my arm. “Don’t try anything, Jay. My men will be watching the building.”

“Yes, Richard.”

“I mean it.” His other hand went to my stomach. “Don’t do or say anything that raises eyebrows, or you might suffer a fatal accident.”

My heart stopped. “I won’t.”

He released my arm and kissed Sadie’s head. “Have a good day, girls.”
