“Oh my gosh.” I gulped in gallons of air. “Thank you.” I bent over, putting my hands on my knees to catch my breath. Sweat dripped down my temples, mixing with the tears streaming down my face. I hadn’t even noticed I was crying.
“See? I’m not so bad,” the cocky driver said.
Sadie flailed in his arms. “I want Zander!”
“Who’s Zander?”
I hadn’t cared what the driver’s name was before now. But after catching my runaway girl, maybe he was right. He wasn’t so bad.
“My daddy! I want my daddy!” Sadie kicked her legs wildly. “He’ll beat you up!”
“Give me her.” I snatched my girl out of his arms. “Hush, Sadie. You’re in big trouble, missy,” I told her in my firm mom voice.
She instantly stopped screaming, then the flood gates broke open.
“Lord help me.” I patted her back.
The driver grimaced, then nudged his head to the side. “Looks like you dropped something.”
A woman jogged toward us, dangling my sunglasses. “You dropped these.”
Holy crap. It was Karma.
“I’ll pick you up at eleven thirty, Ms. Lloyd,” the driver said as he left.
“Yeah. Thanks again.”
“No problem.”
Karma kept a straight face. “Walk back to the building. Pretending we’re chatting.”
Sadie popped her head up. “Karma! Where’s Nova?”
“Shh, gotta be quiet, peanut,” Karma whispered. “We’re on a secret mission.”
Sadie snapped her mouth shut.
My muscles coiled in my neck. “What’s going on?”
“I’m on a rescue mission.”
“No. Richard has proof to put, you know who, away for a very long time.” I didn’t want to say too much with Sadie in my arms.
“He said you’d say that.”
“He? When did you see him?” My heart leaped into my throat. Karma had seen Zander at the jail?
“Ten minutes ago.”
My brain couldn’t compute her response. “Wait. What? Ten minutes ago? How’s that possible?”
Karma snorted. “He’s in Sin City too, silly.”
My feet stopped moving. “How?”
“Keep walking. We’re supposed to be inside for this convo, but your runaway baby nearly ruined the plan.”
