“What email?” Maddy asked Sugar.

Sugar bit her lip. “Um… Maybe I shouldn’t say. He seemed a little uneasy about it.”

Maddy raised a curious brow. “Should he be?”

“No, not really.”

My eyes ping-ponged from Maddy to Sugar, wholly engrossed in their conversation. Ire had been mysterious for months now. He rarely divulged anything about his personal life.

In the club, we respected each other’s privacy. That didn’t mean we were blind. We saw when a brother acted differently like Ire. His most noticeable changes were the amount of time he spent on his cell phone and the frequent outings in his Camaro. Driving a cage during the non-winter months was sacrilege to a biker. Ire took his out a few times a week. Not once had he told anyone where he went. All I knew was it wasn’t club-related, according to Grizzly, who monitored all of us.

“Then what was it about?” Persistent Maddy was at it again.

Sugar leaned forward in her chair. “It’s really no big deal. He wanted recommendations for cookware and some of my recipes.”

Maddy stared at Sugar, confused. “How odd.”

“I’d thought so too, but I sent them anyway.” Sugar flicked her gaze to me. “Eat.”

“Naw, I’m not hungry after all.” No thanks to Track asking about Jaynee. “I should be going. I have a lot to do in preparation for the interviews.”

“Like what?” Maddy snorted. “Assembling your sex toys?”

“You are a naughty mommy with a dirty mind.” I chuckled as I gripped the back of my neck and gave it a good squeeze. I didn’t like how tense I got when talking about Jaynee. “I just need to go for a ride.”

Maddy smiled. “Well, enjoy. And make sure to pick girls us old ladies will like.”

“Right. Because it’s all about you ladies, isn’t it?” I shot her a slow wink, but it was the truth. After two rotten apples, Carla and Misty, I’d make sure the new kittens would fit in with our ever-changing club.

“Of course.” Maddy bit into her cinnamon roll.

“You got it, Angel. You two have a good day.” I went out the back door to the garage where I’d parked my bike.

I was tempted to call Jaynee and advise her on where not to go. But was it my place? She seemed like an intelligent woman, maybe even a little street smart after experiencing her sass.

My blue beauty came into view. She sparkled and shined after the bubble bath Ryder had given her this morning. I caressed her black leather seat, sniffing my tires to be sure he’d used Dawn dish soap and not the harsh chemicals some of the guys used on their hogs. My baby only got gentle soap. If it was safe enough to clean oil off the ducks, it was safe for my girl.

I straddled my throne, inhaling the crisp morning air, then turned the ignition. Revving the engine, I absorbed the sweet sounds into my soul. My bike was the only one who got my love because she wouldn’t feel pain or mourn my death when I was gone. She’d be fine.

Jaynee flashed behind my eyes as I drove off.

She’d be fine on her own too.
