“What’d you do to the masked bandits?”

“That’s club business. We don’t talk about that kind of stuff with the women.”

“It’s my business.”

“I’ll talk to the prez at church and see what he says.” No sense in pissing her off by telling her no dice. Storm wouldn’t want her getting mixed up any more than she and Sadie already were.

She screwed up her face. “Okay, I have no idea what you’re talking about. Prez and church? Prospects? You’re speaking in a foreign language, Zander. I meanLynx.”

I pinched her chin between my thumb and finger. “You and Sadie can call me Zander, but only you two.” Being this close to her was dangerous. Every time I touched her, I wanted her more than the last time.

The corner of her lip curled. Dammit, I wanted to taste her lips. Just once.

“You know, more than ever, I need to get Sadie and me out of Minnesota.”

Fuck, this was precisely what I didn’t want to hear. “I know. I can help you move.”

She shook her head. “I pay my own way, Zander. You’ve already done enough for us.”

“You’re quite a woman, Jaynee. Independent and determined. Lucky is the man who gets to call you his.” A pang hit me square in the chest. She’ll never be mine.

Her cheeks turned pink. “You’re sweet. But I don’t trust men. I’m better off on my own.”

It was selfish of me, but I liked her response more than I should. I hated the thought of another man having what felt like mine. It was crazy, but I couldn’t deny the attraction any longer. It just sucked that I couldn’t act on it.

“You can trust me, Jaynee. I won’t hurt you.”

She put her hand on my thigh. The innocent touch ignited the sensations in my lower region. “I’m glad I met you. If you want to help me, I need to find a job. One that isn’t topless dancing. I’ll work and save up enough money for Sadie and me to move.”

“I have the perfect job. My bar, The Bullet.”

Her face fell slack. “Another bar?”

“This one is a legit bar where everyone keeps their clothes on. I’ll take you there after church.”

She dug her teeth into her bottom lip. Jesus, if it didn’t make me want to sink my own into it too.

“Okay, but I haven’t agreed to it yet.”

I winked. “Understood.”

Maddy and Emilee appeared in the doorway with their babies in tow.

I stood, taking Jaynee’s hand so she could meet them.

“Well, hello,” Maddy greeted first.

“Hey, Lynx,” Emilee said next.

“Ladies, I’d like you to meet my friend, Jaynee.” They looked caught off guard. It was after midnight when we’d returned. I hadn’t been able to tell them about Jaynee and Sadie. I was sure Storm mentioned it to Maddy, but Emilee probably had no clue.

Maddy smiled. “Jaynee, it’s nice to meet you.” She peered around us. “Is that your little girl?”

“Yes, her name is Sadie. She’s four.”

“Aww, she’s adorable,” Emilee said.

Strangely, pride spread through me as if Sadie was my daughter.
