He growled, face turning red. “Fuck, Jaynee. That’s not what I meant.”

I inhaled a deep breath to calm myself before I exploded. This conversation was going in a direction I didn’t like. I couldn’t keep up with his back and forth. One second I thought he wanted me to be more than a friend, then the next, I was an embarrassment.

“If you were my woman, no dude would see you topless but me.”

“Well, I’m not, so why in the hell are we talking about this?”

He scrubbed a hand down the side of his face. “I don’t know.”

Okay, this got awkward fast.

“Maddy told me about a woman she knows who’s looking for a roommate.” Subject change. I didn’t want to fight with him. In fact, when I replayed his words in my head, it sounded like he was thinking of me as more than a friend. Like he was trying to work it all out with me.

Nice going, Jay.

He sighed, scratching the back of his head. “Karma.”

“Yeah, that’s her name. I’m going to call her to get more information.”

Zander’s jaw ticked. “If that’s what you want.”

“It is.”

We stared at each other for a long beat as if at an impasse. If he didn’t want me to move in with Karma, he should say so. Not that it would do any good. My mind was made up. The best thing for Sadie and me was to not have Zander actively in our lives. I saw the way she looked at him. Like he hung the moon… like he was her hero.

He stood from his chair. “We should go. Sadie’s waiting for us.”

“Right.” I stared at his back. The two skulls facing each other gave me the creeps. “Hey?”

He stopped, a hopeful glint in his eyes. “Yeah?”

“Your vest. Do all the guys in the club wear one?”

He nodded, touching the collar. “It’s mandatory. The different patches show our position.” He pointed to his. “Treasurer.”

“You didn’t have it on the day I met you.”

“I don’t wear it when I visit my mom.” The color drained from his face. It seemed like he didn’t mean to tell me that.

“Your mom? Where’s she at?”

He grabbed my hand and tugged me to the door. “I thought we weren’t going to get personal?”

“But friends—”

He got in my face. “Leave it alone, Jay.”

“Okay. Sorry.” Most people freely talked about their parents, even when they didn’t like them. Zander seemed sickened after mentioning his mom.

“No worries. Just one of my boundaries.” He winked and pinched my chin. His hazel eyes dropped to my lips.

Being this close to him made my stomach flutter.

Kiss me. Kiss me.

No, you’re losing your mind, girlfriend.

Yes, boundaries were necessary with this guy.
