Jaynee: Kinda early for you, isn’t it? Expecting company?

Why did I ask him that? Stupid, insecure woman.

It seemed to be taking him longer to reply. Had I angered him?

My phone lit up in my hand. He was calling.

“Hello,” I whispered.

“No.”

“No, what?”

“No, I’m not expecting company. What’s going on, Jay?”

Oh crap. He did sound angry. “Nothing. I was just… curious.”

“You think after I kissed you, I’d have someone else in my bed?”

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

He growled into the phone. The vibration speared up my spine. “No one is in my bed.”

“Okay.” What else could I say? I didn’t want to offend him, but could I trust him?

“You need to know, I don’t call women. I don’t text them.”

“So why are you calling and texting me?” Weird. How did he communicate with his hookups?

“You’re different.”

“I’m your friend. That makes me non-threatening.”

He laughed. “Hell no. You scare the crap out of me.”

I smiled. “Really?”

“Yeah. Don’t go telling my brothers.”

My smile grew. “I won’t.”

“Is peanut doing okay?”

“Yes, she’s sleeping soundly beside me.” I gazed at my precious girl.

“Put the phone to her ear.”

“Why?”

“So I can tell her good night.”

Oh, melt me.

“Okay.” I put my cell at her ear and wondered how long to hold it there. I took it back. “All good?”

“All good. Do you think she heard?”

“I do.”
