“Do you remember having a lady in your life?”

Me? Have a girl? I didn’t do relationships. “The only woman that comes to mind is my mom, but she’s been gone for a long time.” Because my asshole dad had killed her. I didn’t tell the doctor my thought. He might think I’d not only lost my memory but also had a screw or two loose.

“Oh.” Patch considered me. “Do you want to see who this woman is? Maybe it will help jog your memory.”

I shrugged a shoulder. “Sure. What can it hurt?”

“I agree.” Patch opened the door. “He wants to see her.”

“I told you not until he was well,” Storm hissed.

“The patient said yes.” Patched reached his hand out. “Come in, dear.”

“Thank you so much, Patch. At least you’re reasonable and compassionate.”

I was taken aback by the beautiful blonde shooting Storm an angry look.

“Hi,” she said softly as she approached my bed. Tears filled her pretty blue eyes. “I’ve been worried about you. No. That’s not true. I’ve been going out of my mind, Drew.” She sat in the chair next to the bed.

“How do you know me?”

She blinked back her tears. “You don’t know who I am?”

I shook my head.

She peered over her shoulder at Storm.

“I told you.” Storm left the room.

She turned back toward me. “I’m Ava. Ava Hagen. We were… I was…”

“What?” I urged her.

“You don’t remember anything about me?”

“Honey, I would never forget a face like yours.”

Oh God. She started crying.

Patch handed her some tissues. “It’ll be okay, dear. He’ll remember in time.”

I pressed my fingers to my temple. “Remember what in time?”

The pretty blonde sniffled. “That I’m your girlfriend.”

I couldn’t help snorting. “My girlfriend? Yeah, right. You look too soft and innocent to be my girlfriend. You’re way out of my league.”

She stared at me with a dumbfounded expression.

“What?”

“I am your girlfriend, and I’m not soft or innocent. You called me your warrior, sometimes little warrior.”

“Damn. That’s cheesy. Are you sure you’re not bullshitting me? I think you’re bullshitting me.”

Her bottom lip trembled as a tear streaked down her cheek.

Okay, I didn’t need to be an asshole to this chick. The doctor said I’d lost some of my memories, and since I could recall a lot of my past, I guessed he was right. “Hey, I’m sorry for being a dick.” Making a woman cry was low. It wasn’t her fault I didn’t know her. I didn’t know the others either.
