“She said that a long time ago, when her wounds were still healing. She could’ve changed her mind.”

“Maybe. Maybe not. I can’t lose her, even what little I get of her.”

“Losing your love fucking sucks.” He drained his beer and raised the bottle for another.

“So does being with your love, knowing you’ll never have them the way you want.”

He turned toward me. “I’d do anything to have Jill alive and well, even if I couldn’t be with her.”

“I know, I know. You’re a fucking saint. I didn’t mean anything by it. I’m just frustrated and confused.”

“Confused about what?” Lynx asked as he hopped onto a free stool next to me.

“Ava.”

“Ah yes. Ava.”

“What’ll you have, Lynx?” Copper asked as he placed a fresh beer in front of Wolf.

“Whatever’s on tap, thanks.” Lynx eyed me. “Is Ava okay?”

“She’s perfect.”

“So why are you confused?”

“Today when I was with her, I had this weird feeling, like she wanted me.”

Lynx and Wolf both raised curious eyebrows.

“Like want you, want you?” Lynx grinned, nudging me in the shoulder with his own. “As in sex?”

“I know what you meant, dipshit. I’m sure I was only fabricating it because I’d do anything to be with her.”

Wolf snorted. “You’re a mess, brother. Maybe you were reading her right.”

“Doubt it. When I asked if she wanted to do anything else, she said just go home and go to bed.” My cock twitched when an image of her naked hit me.

I was so hard up, I could hardly stand it. I needed to have sex instead of jerking myself off.

“Damn, you might be right.” Lynx drank his beer, watching me through the mirror. “How long will you hold out for her?”

Wolf shot me a look.

“I love her. How long would you hold out for Jaynee?”

Wolf grunted. “Good.”

“Forever,” Lynx replied.

“Exactly.” I finished off my beer, done with the conversation. “I’ll see you tomorrow.” I lifted off the stool.

“Where you going?” A stupid grin spread across Lynx’s face.

“To my room, asshole.”

“When you text Ava, tell her I said hi.” Lynx laughed, but I knew he was messing with me.

I flipped him off, went up to my bedroom, and absorbed the quiet into my bones.
